I Have Been Taking Phenergan For About 6 Years After Back Fusion Surgeries Am Trying To Stop Using It But Getting Very Ill When
Updatedi have been taking Phenergan for over 6 years after several back fusions. I have become very ill after stopping the use of Phenergan with extreme nausea and headaches and flue like symptoms. This has been happening for over a week and I am getting sicker every day. I finally took a phenergan pill last night and all of the bad symptoms stopped. How do I stop using this drug without becoming so ill?

Phenergan contains the active ingredient Promethazine, which is an antihistamine that's also often used to prevent nausea and vomiting.
Since you've been taking it for so long, your body has basically become dependent on it and is no longer use to dealing with certain stimuli without it, thus if you stop taking it abruptly, you experience rebound effects which may be worse than what you started taking it to treat.

Thus, the only way you'll really be able to stop taking and minimize the rebound effects is by doing a slow taper.
Does your doctor know you're trying to stop it? Have they provided any advice?
