Cephalexin is actually commonly used for treating these types of dental infections, as well as many others. Did your dentist recommend it to you after a procedure?

The usual adult dose for a bacterial infection is 500 mg orally every 6 hours for 7 to 21 days, depending on the nature and severity of the infection.
