i now now take oxycodone 30 mg 6 times aday my dr wants to decrease to 4 times a day but add oxycontin 30mg twice a day. i am very leery of this. i have astma and hypertension. shoud i be concerned? I am 61

Hi, Nancy! I totally understand your fears, playing with any medication when you have serious medical conditions is terrifying.

Oxycontin actually contains the same medication you are currently taking, it's just a time released formulation of Oxycodone, so you really wouldn't be changing anything. Your doctor is just trying to help you get better pain control.

The tablets you're currently taking are regular release, which means that all of the Oxycodone in them is released and starts working in your body about 15 to 20 minutes after you swallow them. With the time released, it's slowly released over a period of 12 hours, so it can help your pain for a longer period of time.

The side effects are the same, nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation, plus it carries the same risk of being habit forming as the regular release you're already taking.

Make sure you can fill the script before you ask the doctor for higher mgs. Also, time release Oxycontin did not work so well for me. They hit you at the wrong time. Go for IR so when you need pain relief, you get it.

Yes. You absolutely should be aware of what is happening in every state in the nation. If you are interested in some literature and educational sites I'm happy to share them with you so you are able to make an informed decision for you. Nobody else has the power or responsibility that you do at this point. I would definitely advise against giving that away. It never hurts to be informed.

I am on a low dose of oxycodone and I wake up in pain really early every day because the meds wear off while I sleep.
Ny doctor suggested night time oxycontin and I resisted for awhile. I finally tried it last week and I woke up without feeling like my spine is made of broke glass. I was so happy I cried. I almost didn’t try it, specifically because people here were complaining about “plastic contin” and I already have stomach issues from a previous h.Pylori infection.
I’m so glad I tried it. Maybe the old, abusable tabs were “better”, but since I never tried those I can’t say. I am just very happy I listed to my pain management doc. She knows her stuff.
