Hypothyroid/looking For Natural Supplement
(Newest replies first)

Updated

Hi,
I am a 36 yr old female. I started noticing hair loss and brain fog about 2 years ago. I finally had my thyroid tested and Dr said it was on low end of normal so prescribed 25 levothyroxine. No change in symptoms so increased to 50 things seemed to become more stable. Then retested about a month ago and increased me to 75. Have been feeling really weird in my head, like my head is floating/just off, hard to describe plus hair loss got worse. Dr said to go back to 50. My question is...is there something natural I can take instead of prescription drugs. I feel like my symptoms are not that horrible that I want to be on meds forever but there is so much confusing info/products out there its hard to know what is safe. Don't have any issues with energy or weight. I exercise daily.

@Meg,

You may consider adding foods into your diet that contain the following:

Iodine

Selenium

Zinc

Copper

Iron

Vitamin A
(beta-carotene form)

Antioxidants

B vitamins

The thyroid requires specific vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients to be able to function properly, the vitamins and minerals listed are supposed to support thyroid function. You may also be able to find a multivitamin that contains vitamins and minerals for thyroid support. I read about one called Thyroid Advantage; which has good reviews on Amazon.

Just be sure to speak with your doctor before taking any new supplements.

I hope this information helps!

@Meg I am not certain what you think is unnatural about levothyroxine, but if you want something that will replace the hormone your doctor could put you on armour. It is basically the original thyroid supplement as it is ground desiccated porcine thyroid (pig thyroid glad dried and ground up).

Low thyroid over the long haul has a lot of negative side effects, but synthroid/ levothyroxine is not some cooked up chemical it is the actual replacement hormone not a "prescription drug" is the way we normally think of prescription drugs.
