Hydromorph Contin Changes

My sister has a chronic illness and severe chronic pain. Amongst other medications, she takes 12 mg. hydromorph contin three times a day, and also has 3 mg. hydromorph contin for higher pain days.

Recently her pain has gotten substantially worse, and one day she opened a capsule of the 12 mg. strength, and noticed that the contents were changed. The capsules used to be filled with small "beads" of medication, but now they appear to be filled with a crystal like substance closely resembling sugar granules, and they are sweet, like sugar. Since then she has opened capsules of both strengths that she has been prescribed, and they are the same.

Has there been some recent change in the manufacturing of Hydromorph Contin? Or does she need to be looking at her pharmacist?

She is concerned this is the cause of her increased pain and I would like to help her figure this out - so any advice would be helpful! Thank you.

Unfortunately, due to the severe dangers that were found with it, this medication is not available in the U.S. and thus, since that is where I am based, I have no information available on its manufacture.

However, such a chance might be due to the company trying to rectify the problem that caused it to be removed from pharmacies in the U.S.

The reason it was pulled here was due to the fact that when people took it and then took any type of alcohol, even the small amount in some cough syrups afterwards, it would destroy the time released mechanism and cause all of the medication to be released at once and that caused several overdoses. A few of them were fatal.

Has she tried asking her pharmacist? They may have more information on it.

if her hydromorph contin caps were filled with a crystal like substance then some one was screwing around with her pills . put a little to your tounge see if its sugar cause i have seen people rip others off by replacing the beads with sugar or other substances. i have been on them for 12 years or more they still come in bead form. So if not in bead form have them checked or set trap for who ever is stealing your pills. good luck

One more thing if you cant find out who is stealing from you i would open them right at pharmacy to make sure what you getting . again good luck
