Hydrocodone Apap 5mg 500mg (Top voted first)
UpdatedI have a bulging disc at L2 and its pressing on my spinal cord nerve which is very painful. I have a primary care, very conservative, and she gave me hydrocodone 5 mg until I can see neurosurgeon. That's going to be a few weeks and I have a very physical job and the med she prescribed isn't helping. Does my condition warrant something stronger? I feel like a drug seeker asking, but I really need something to get me through the night so I can sleep without pain.

Hydrocodone and Acetaminophen are the active ingredients in Vicodin, which is a narcotic pain reliever.
As to requesting something else, it isn't your job that makes it warranted, it is the pain level you experience. If this medication isn't strong enough, then you should contact your doctor and let her know. As long as your aren't flipping out and demanding it, you won't seem like a drug seeker, you'll just be a person in pain that needs help.
A drug seeker demands these types of medications from their doctors, they abuse them and run out early and cause many problems for themselves and the doctors they are seeing.
Side effects to this medication can include: nausea, drowsiness, dizziness and dry mouth.

It's not necessarily JUST that my job is active (I am a nanny of young children) but my ability to reduce lifting, ice periodically, and rest is compromised.perhaps the dose she gave me is appropriate for ppl who have some flexibility to control their lives. I was wondering if what she gave me SHOULD work and if I should just suck it up or if others have found that the same dosage was a very conservative attempt for them as well and what would they recommend instead.
Well, there is really no way to say what 'should' work for any given person. Theoretically, since it is a narcotic, it should help with your pain, however, in reality, no medication actually works for everyone that takes it.
Just as an example, years ago, when I was younger and was on pain management, one of the first medications they have me try was Tramadol, which is very effective for many people, however, in my case, all it did was make me sick and I couldn't hold anything down. It did nothing for my pain, whatsoever.
It really depends on the person and their body and there is no reason to just suck it up, if it isn't working and you are still in pain. There are plenty of other options you can discuss with your doctor.
If this medication is having some effect, but just not enough, there is a higher dosage available that you can ask about, which contains 10mgs of the Hydrocodone.

After many years of fighting pain and being misdiagnosed, when new doctors finally got to the root of my problem, the medication they gave me in the hospital that helped was Dilaudid, which contains the active ingredient Hydromorphone.

And for a brief period of at home use, I was given a low dose of Oxycodone:

Does anyone else have any advice or suggestions to add?
Thanks so much! I finally spoke to someone at my doc office and they doubled the dose, just to try for the night. I am seeing the neurosurgeon in a few wks, and hopefully something more permanent can be done.
Thanks again!
I HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH, I THINK, L3
AFTER SUFFERING FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS WITH PAIN IN MY BACK AND DOWN ONE LEG,
I WENT TO A NEUROLOGIST THAT CHECKED IT OUT WITH A LONG SKINNY NEEDLE AND AN OSCILLOSCOPE......AND IT WAS A SIMPLE CURE.
HE SENT ME TO A PHYSICAL THERAPIST NEAR THE HOSPITAL THE SAME DAY AND I WAS CURED IN 15 MINUTES BY DOING A SIMPLE EXCERCISE.
HE LAID ME ON MY STOMACH AND TOLD ME TO SUPPORT THE TOP OF MY BODY WITH MY ELBOWS....IT WAS A LITTLE PAINFUL AT FIRST THEN IT GOT BETTER WITHIN 2 MINUTES. I GOT TO THE POINT WHERE I COULD STICK MY HANDS OUT IN FRONT OF ME ON THE FLOOR AND DOING A VERY GENTLE PUSHUP (WHILE STILL LYING DOWN). WHAT THIS WAS DOING WAS FORCING A DISC IN MY BACK TO LINE UP WITH THE SPINAL COLUMN AGAIN. NOW WHENEVER I FEEL THE LEAST BACK PAIN I DO THIS EXERCISE. IT IS KIND OF LIKE BITING ON A HAMBURGER ON ONE SIDE AND THE TOMATO WANT TO SLIDE OUT ON THE OTHER SIDE. THIS EXERCISE FORCES THE DISC (OR TOMATO) TO REENTER THE SPINAL COLUMN REDUCING THE PAIN AND PROTECTING THE DISC.
THIS MAY NOT BE YOUR EXACT PROBLEM BECAUSE IT DEPENDS ON WHICH DIRECTION THE SPINE CURVATURE IS PUSHING THE DISC...BUT I THINK IT IS WORTH A TRY...DO IT GENTLY AT FIRST.
I HAVEN'T HAD A BACK PAIN IN ABOUT 7 YEARS SINCE I TRIED THIS.
GOOD LUCK
