How Soon Should I Start Naltrexone?

My doctor prescribed me Naltrexone to ease me out of drinking wine daily. He said to start it immediately but since I had wine yesterday do I need to wait a few days? He did not mention that but now I have seen it discussed on some forums. I really really want to stop drinking and become a more efficient person, the person I used to be.

@Possumqueen,

According to NIH.gov, "Naltrexone should not be used to treat people who are still drinking large amounts of alcohol." - However, my opinion is that a little wine each day probably wouldn't fall into this category, if a patient has at least some level of control over their habit. Additionally, Naltrexone has been reported to not cause a severe physical response in the event that you do drink (although the above statement leads me to believe that this is based on the idea of consumption in low to moderate amounts of alcohol - such as the percentages found in wine).

The drug monograph also notes that what Naltrexone does is simply reduce the desire to drink more and may decrease the feeling of intoxication - to help manage a patient's level of alcohol dependence. I haven't read a lot of personal reviews attesting to how well it works, but it seems from this research that you should be ok taking your doctor's advice to start it immediately...

Hope this helps! Does anyone else here have a different perspective from personal experience?
