How Much Hydrocodone Can Safely Be Taken?

I have been prescribed Hydrocodone and would like to know how much I can safely take without worrying about an overdose. One pill is not touching the pain!

In adults, the max dose of Hydrocodone is 60 mg/day or a max single dose of 15 mg.

In children older than 12 years of age, the max dose of Hydrocodone is 45 mg/day or a max single dose of 10 mg.

The usual adult dose is 2.5 to 7.5 mg of Hydrocodone every 4 to 6 hours.

Editor's note: This refers to Hydrocodone by itself, not when taken in combination with other ingredients such as Acetaminophen.

It really depends on how long you've been on it. Most patients can take 1-2 Hydrocodone every 6 hours as needed for pain. If it's 7.5/325 then you can safely take two but what other medications are you on? How much Tylenol is in your prescription? Hydrocodone is more for acute pain and not designed for long term use. Just remember your body gets used to this medication fairly quickly and it will take more and more to take away pain. I've found instead of increasing the hydro that adding 50-100mg of Tramadol is beneficial and safe if you don't drink alcohol or take valium or any benzodiazepines with it. I'm also a huge advocate of Kratom and other natural herbs for pain. It has enabled many patients to cut way down or even stop taking narcotics. These are just suggestions to talk to your doctor about. The goal for chronic pain suffers is to manage their pain, not completely get rid of it because you can't maintain that on normal therapeutic doses of pain meds, you'll always need more and more.

I have had 7 back surgeries and cancer twice. My pain Dr. has me on 160 mg. of MS Contin three times a day and it only reduces my pain level to about a 5 at best and as high as a 9 on the Mankowski pain chart. There is a big problem with this as I have had to move and no doctors around here will even accept me as a patient. Not even to help me detox, so I'm doing it on my own. I don't recommend this as it's very dangerous. The pain doctors around here tell me that it's enough to kill a horse.

Take as prescribed. If it's not helping, call doctor or pharmacy and they'll tell you what to take until your next visit. You may just need oxcycodone instead of hydrocodone. Don't self medicate. It leads to addiction, abuse, and death.

And don’t forget your MS Contin is just morphine. There isn’t acetaminophen in it as well like there is with Hydrocodone. The person who started this thread is probably going to destroy their liver before they overdose on opiates.

I agree. The Hydrocodone is most likely combined with another pain killer (such as Acetaminophen) which can indeed harm the liver. David's response is most likely talking about just the Hydrocodone itself. Is it even prescribed that way anymore?
