Hi John,
While there's no exact number of pills for a potentially lethal dose, I can tell you that for your own safety, the FDA recommends NO MORE THAN 4000mgs a day of Acetaminophen, and that is to be spread out over a 24hr period - NOT to be taken all at once. They also state in their warning that anything over 325mgs in a sitting has been shown to cause liver damage/failure; which from my understanding can eventually lead to death if liver damage is severe.
So why don't you just ask the doctor for something stronger if Vicodin isn't cutting it? A lot of chronic pain patients are prescribed much more potent medications WITHOUT Acetaminophen, such as Oxycodone, Opana, or Fentanyl; which (in my opinion) sounds like something you should discuss with your doctor if such a high dose of Hydrocodone isn't working for you.
