How Many Oxycodone 5/325 Should My Mother Take For Hip Pain?

My mom is 75 years old and has never really had to take opiate pain killers in the past. She doesn't even take them after a root canal. However, her hip started giving her trouble about 2 years ago, but just now is having so much pain that she has to take at least one pain pill so she can get up. She has Tylenol 3 with codeine and generic percocet. The tylenol 3 is starting to not control it, but she is afraid of becoming dependent So, big question. How many tablets can she take w/o becoming dependent? I can't get her to take two of either one of the two meds because she is so terrified! She has to get her hip replaced eventually, with pain about every 3 days that is enough for her to be suffering. How can I ease her fears????

Hello, Chris! How is she doing?

Perhaps the best thing to do would be to explain to her that there is a difference between addiction and dependence.

Our bodies become dependent on anything that we ingest on a regular basis for a long period of time, whether it be our morning coffee or non-narcotic medications, such as those for blood pressure. Stopping results in some minor withdrawal effects, but nothing severe or dangerous.

However, addiction is much different. It occurs when someone likes the way a drug makes them feel, but since those feelings are just due to side effects that eventually wear off, they keep having to take more and more of it to get them back and then, that's when you'd get serious withdrawal from stopping a drug.

Does anyone else have any ideas to help?
