How Long Would Clindamycin Still Be Good For?

I have an abscess tooth and was given Clindamycin about a month ago and finished it. Now the swollen face and pain is back and I have a prescription from 10/2013. Is it still good? And safe to take? Can't get into the dentist till next week.

Hi Paula,

If it were any other drug-class I might feel differently about how I answer this question, but when it comes to expired antibiotics specifically, I wouldn't encourage anyone to chance it. Because even if it is still good to a degree, the possibility off developing antibiotic resistant bacteria is always something you have to keep in mind... and the problem is that there's really no feasible way to know for certain if or how much it could've degraded since the expiration date.

Have you considered looking into any other possible options (such as clove essential oil)? A small diluted application on the tooth a few times daily may help numb the pain/fight infections until you get in to see the dentist. Clove oil has been a lifesaver for me when I was facing similar situations.
