How Long Will It Take For Amoxicillin To Begin Working?

I received a serious cat bite in my foot. Went to E.R. because my foot turned bright red and very swollen. I was prescribed Amoxicillin Pot Clavulanate 875, but after 3 days it appears the redness has spread to my toes and my foot is so swollen that I can't wear any shoes. How long does it take for this medicine to begin working?

Hello Cassie,

According to DailyMed the medication your doctor has prescribed you contains the two active ingredients Amoxicillin and Clavulnate Potassium. This combination is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. With that being said, it will not reduce the swelling or help manage the pain if there is any.

Your bodies immune system will play the largest role in determining the time frame of your healing but there are a few things you can do to ensure it goes as fast as possible. Keep the wound clean at all times, continue to take your medication at the appropriate intervals for the full duration of the medications prescription even if your symptoms subside. Also make sure to do your best to reduce the swelling it often helps to do cycles of icing the wound to keep the swelling down.

I would definitely advise you do a follow up with your doctor since it seems the conditions have gotten worse.

Thank you for your advice. I spoke to my doctor and he advised that it may take a few days for the antibiotics to have an effect. I purchased a riser for under my desk at work so I can keep my foot elevated. Hopefully this will help.

I'm glad that I was able to provide some useful advice. The riser is a wonderful idea! Keeping the wound elevated will improve blood flow and reduce swelling which reduces pain and ultimately reduces recovery time.
