How Long To Take Diltiazem After Open Heart Surgery.

I am 39 and recently had quintuple bypass surgery. They took one artery out of each arm, a vein from my leg and used my mammoral artery. The surgeon said I would have to take diltiazem for about 3 months post-op so my radial arteries wont pulse and close off. My cardiologist says that I need to be on it for the rest of my life. My surgeon is also a cardiologist. Who should I listen to? Is the cardiologist just saying that to get kickbacks? Three months is a big difference from the rest of my life.

Hello, Jay! How are you?

Generally bypass patients do need to take such a medication for the rest of their lives, your surgeon may have just said it would be 3 months, initially, then you should be reevaluated to see how you are doing.

Unless he owns a pharmacy, there is no way for your cardiologist to get kickbacks on a generic medication, such as this one.

The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, and hypotension.

For the best results, you should follow the directions of your cardiologist.

Is there anything else I can help with?
