I have infection in my leg and doctor prescribed the medication for me and told me that I have to take it for at least half year. I am wondering if it will hurt my liver and my stomach because I have never heard that one should take antibiotic for more than 21 days.

Hello, Lil! How are you?

No, sometimes for a severe infection, it is necessary to take an antibiotic for a very long time. Some people that are prone to infections take them daily, for life, as a preventative.

The only hepatic issue of concern is if you already have impaired liver function. However, if yours is fine, then there shouldn't be anything to worry about. But feel free to discuss your concerns with your doctor to be sure.

The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, diarrhea and superinfection.

Is there anything else I can help with?
