How Long Does It Need To Stay In The Body To Work?

I have a reduced colon due to cancer and also have a Jpouch. I started on Oxubutynin and the first day saw the pill in my stool. Again on the second day also. It is only staying in my body for 5-6 hours. Is that enough time for it to work?

Hi Mildred,

According to medsafe.govt, Oxybutynin is reportedly eliminated from the plasma with a less than 2 hour half-life; and it's bioavailability is said to be about 6%. From my understanding, this means that not only does it not have much time to work in your body once you take it, but also not very much of it is actually being absorbed either. This, in conjunction with whatever binders/fillers are being added to the tablet would probably be a valid reason for what you're experiencing.

I've actually heard about this sort of thing happening to other patients as well who were taking a completely different medication, but attributed its presence in the stool to the binders/fillers that were different from that of other manufacturers. So my suggestion to you if this continues to occur, would be to ask your doctor about trying Oxybutynin from another manufacturer, just to see if it gets absorbed any better.

Does anyone else have thoughts on this?
