How Come I Can't Find Viractin Cold Sore Treatment In Any Drug Store? (Page 4) (Top voted first)
UpdatedViractin Cold Sore Treatment was the BEST. I have suffered with coldsores for years. This was the best treatment I have come acrossed. A small amount of this product and no more coldsore. I haven't found an answer to my question yet. Is Viractin still available over counter or do I need a prescription for it?
how can we get viractin back on the market.. my son and I both agree it's the best thing ever and nothing else works. Why would they get rid of a good thing?
Re: Randi (# 59)
Where did you order viractin from? I am on my last tube.
Re: Nancy (# 60)
I haven't found anywhere that still carries it, but someone posted the other day that their Walmart was able to order it for them. I think they don't make it anymore, but I will definitely try that - I've been nursing my last tube along for quite a while now!
I've also found relief from straight eucalyptus oil (get a reputable brand)
HTH!
Everyone is saying the same thing - none of the other cold sore meds worked and Viractin did! I'm considering taking what's left of mine and having it reverse engineered. lol Seriously!
Meanwhile, I have a tiny bit left in my tube and have found, as one user mentioned way back in this thread, eucalyptus oil helps a lot!
Re: Jennifer (# 61)
Where did you get your eucalyptus oil and which brand is the best ?
Re: Nancy (# 64)
I’ve ordered it from young living and DoTERRA. They’re two of the most popular reputable brands. There are others out there, but I can’t recall the brands. Should be able to find them pretty easily with an online search though. Just make sure the one you get is food grade. HTH!
It is the best i did not know you were ever able to get it otc definitely can with a script unfortunately most insurances don't cover it and its expensive. Good luck..
Why was the cold sore gel viractin discontinued? What is the best over the counter drug I can use instead of viractin?
Re: Amen (# 66)
As with you, my body chemistry works best with Veractin for Cold Sores to terminate it. BUT to get the product I need to purchase it online to get the best price as no Pharmacy carries the product here in Canada.
I take vitamins B2 & C when one begins. It knocks them back quickly.
I agree with the others that Viractin was the best for cold sores.
Who is the manufacturer so we request for it to be put back on the market.
I agree. It was the only OTC product that actually stopped the cold sore from forming if put on at first sign. Also helped reduce duration/pain. Probably discontinued because it WORKED!
Re: CeeinJax (# 3)
I don't understand why this product was discontinued. It worked like magic. The last tube I bought through Walmart pharmacy I had bought a few tubes. As of 12/23/23 I'm still squeezing a bit out of my last tube, by the way it's gold to me. It does work I don't care what you say it seals the blister in its track & dries it out. Please, please bring it back!!!
For those of you who suffer cold sores, you might consider the vitamin Lysine. My daughter has had good luck with Lysine for years to keep the sores at bay. And more recently, my shingles are almost (I have 3 spots I'm dealing with) gone due to my taking Lysine. If I feel a breakout coming on, I take 500 mg. between meals 3 to 4 times a day for just a few days. Then as maintenance I take the Lysine twice a day. I've had no side effects, problems, and can't imagine why more people don't take Lysine for shingles, cold sores, etc.
My concern is big brother making it impossible to get-quinine remember?
I am sorry, but Viractin has been discontinued by the manufacturer. It contained the active ingredient Tetracaine, which was a topical anesthetic, so it really did nothing to shorten the duration of a cold sore, though the moisturizing effects of it could help keep them from drying out and cracking and bleeding.
You may want to try a different over the counter product, such as Abreva, which contains Docosanol, it is an antiviral, which can shorten the duration of a cold sore, since they are caused by a virus.

Have you tried asking your pharmacist what other alternatives are available?
