How long does Oxycodone impair a person? If I were to take a larger than perscribed does at 1am,will it effect me at 8am?

Hi Alesse,

Oxycodone has a plasma half-life of 3 - 4.5 hours; which means that in normal individuals, half of it is eliminated within 3 - 4.5 hours. Then half of the remainder is eliminated in the next 3 - 4.5 hours, and so on.

Usually, it takes around 8-10 half-lives for the drug to drop below detectable levels if you take a dose of about 80mg (which is a fairly strong dose). That means that as far as a drug test is concerned, it will essentially be "out of your system" within about 3-4 days.

I know this response is about 2 days late, but to answer your question, I don't think it would've been out of your system by 8am; however its peak effects should have worn off by that time based on the info above.

If you took 20 mg of oxycodone qod (every other day) would you NOT develop tolerance?

Taking any narcotic consistently in any form will create a tolerance. Taking 20 mg, or even 5mg, every other day, you would still develop a tolerance. Not as quickly as if you were taking them every day, but it would still happen.

If you are abusing them or using them illegally, stop. If you are taking them as prescribed, just ask yourself, "Do I really NEED these right now?" If the answer is no, don't take them. Trust me - I know how awesome they feel, I have them for chronic pain, and it's tempting, but the only way not to develop a tolerance is to only take them when you NEED to.
