Help With Substitute For New 20mg Oxycontin

20mg Oxycontin OP doesn't seem to work as well for me. I take it 3 times a day with 15mg oxycodone breakthru. Can anyone suggest a replacement for the 20mg's. Would a 15mg oxycodone and a 5 mg oxycodone work as well. Thanks so much for your help.

It would be the same dosage, but since those ones are not time released, it would not last as long to relieve your pain, so such a dosage would have to be taken more frequently. Generally the regular formulations have to be taken 3 to 4 times a day, as opposed to the every 12 hours that you take Oxycontin.


There have been many complaints regarding the new formulation not being as effective as the original, as well as comments that it caused odd side effects.

As to other medications that may help, you may wish to discuss MS Contin with your doctor. It is a 12 hour time released Morphine.

Thanks so much I appreciate that you took the time and it looks like good advise. I don't think I can handle morphine. Have you ever heard of Roxycontin? Thaks again.

Hello: So I just got something from my insurance company telling me they no longer will pay for oxy 20 or the generic..which is off the market anyway. The substitute is morphine sulfate I believe..that's what they are covering. How much of this do I need to equal one 20mg oxy?? I take 3 20's per day.. Thanks for any help I can get..

If you take 3 to 4 of the 30mg Morphine S. IR bec if you do the math one 30mg morphine S. IR is very close to a 20mg oxy bec that is what I take. I just got a script for Oxycotin and my insurance will not cover so I am taking the MRS IR 30mg works great. It feels cleaner and gets rid of the pain well but the Morphine IR will last as long as a Oxycodone tho my Dr claims it will last longer than a Oxycodone.

Maybe try 40mg in oxy ms only 2 xs a day OR keep 20 oxycontin and raise the oxy ir's to 20mg ..gl
