Did you start the tablets the first day of your period or at another point in your cycle?
If you started on the first day of your period, then you were immediately protected, but if you started them at any other point in your cycle it would take a full 7 days for them to become effective to prevent ovulation, so it wouldn't be safe to have unprotected intercourse until the 8th day, or later.
