Valerie - you are who I was looking for as I just put something similar on the discussion table under Chronic Pain patients organizing to fight for the civil rights. I am ready to sign, protest, fight and help in any way I can - Colorado is getting really bad and I am terrified that without my medication I will not be able to live with this pain. I tried all the surgeries, IV's, alternative methods and after 22 years and finally having my pain level at a 5 most days and I can not go back to going to a hospital everyday - and they don't help anymore anyway.

Sorry to hear about your challenges with receiving proper care. I really hope the petition works to your favor when push comes to shove.

A lot of chronic pain patients have had to turn to other means for getting relief since this issue first began spreading. So it's hard to say what it will take in order to straighten things back out to the way it was before.

But in light of the situation, I'd be curious to know if any of you have considered looking into or have found success using natural options for pain management in the meantime?

Valerie -- based on what I am finding there are dozens of petitions but they are all under different titles - perhaps if we come up with a simple PAIN PATIENT UNITED or something simple with just Pain - not Chronic or Intractable or any additional wording. If we had a website built which is not that difficult and a blog and work at getting pain doctors to post our site at their facilities and more over many people are not comfortable with writing to the congress, senate, state and federal politicians, FDA etc. so if we provided a form letter with a section for them to describe - briefly - their affliction that they could just sign and send - as well as provide their signature on a standard petition we could get the numbers needed. When you add up the numbers for all the different petitions that are all basically trying to do the same thing - we could work towards getting a 10K to start and promote it to get to 100K. With the millions that are suffering we need to simply the process and become united in order to get the attention of lobbyists, pain doctors, professionals, attorney groups, etc. that are willing to help. Chronic pain is like any other disease it hits people from all walks of life - park bench to park place. The petition process is just too scattered right now as I happened upon the med chat by chance. As you know being in pain is challenging and exhausting enough and it is hard to get the energy to participate in making bowl of cereal much less protesting to politicians that are only after recognition. They need to know that all these pain patients are voters too - not just the families of the 17 million people who died from overdose who want someone or something to blame. We know that the majority were either abusing because they were in pain and not on strong enough medicine, or mixing with other meds, booze or illegal drugs. In some cases doctors prescribe methadone without consulting a pain specialist but I almost died from Lyrica and my husband stopped breathing from Tranzadone. The majority of the 17 million deaths were not the fault of the medication or the doctor but mishandling. thanks for your time.

I am a 68 yr old woman suffering severe spinal stenosis, herniated discs, and a mustitude of other spinal issues. Surgeon said there was so much damage, that to operate would most likely cause a "domino effect". Now, even though I'm on a fairly low dosage of opiate meds, I understand that my dosage is going to be reduced by another 45%. I'm so tired of the pain, and depression caused by no being able to live a normal, productive life. I'm no a criminal..my only "crime" is being in constant pain. I know my story is only a "drop in the bucket" compared to many others. We need to be treated with compassion and dignity. We need to be able to live a life that does NOT revolve around never-ending pain. Why do we have to pay for the crooks that profit from being "pushers"? They should be in prison...not us.

Well done Valerie. Count me in!! And there is so much more to this story, so much more that I have been investigating the swamp of the pharmaceutical industry and the so called pain management doctors who together with a pharmaceutical company that is the main manufacturer of opiates are filling their DEEP POCKETS. of a multi-billion dollar a year haul at the expense and health and welfare of the innocent public that has trusted them to support the chronic pain patients and others. But because of the greed and money involved, I would venture to say ,that while we are struggling to beg for pain relief, that is now almost impossible, the company and the doctors have failed to be honest with everyone that takes opiate prescription drugs, that there are horrible side effects that they have kept from everyone. Some of the medical problems that M.S. Contin can cause, besides the ones that are listed in the company's drug insert are massive tooth decay and tooth loss, deep vein thrombosis and so many more. My daughter and I have each developed some of these medical problems and some are life threatening. When I made the connection to what was happening with are medical problems and taking M.S. Contin (morphine) I was shocked and very upset. There are also problems that are latent and can develop years after a patient is no longer taking the medications. All of this information is online, including people who are posting tragic stories of the complete loss of their teeth, which is just one of the horrific things that happened to my daughter and me. I'm going to be writing a book about this ,as the public has a right to know. The book will be published soon. I am totally behind the movement to restore the rights for the chronically ill pain patients, but the information about the risks that I have told you about, and others must be told to the patient. As a chronic pain individual I support every chronically ill person in thriving with their appropriate medications but I don't support your ignorant stance on stating "allow junkies to continue to kill themselves as they choose". I feel that you believe because you take legal prescriptions that you are superior to an individual that for one reason or another has gone to seek out illegal or illicit drugs! WE are all addicted one way or another. Prescription meds are considered to be synthetic opiates to many. Do you realize that so many of the very people you are standing up for by circulating this petition for have already or very likely may turn to buying pills illegally because they can't get them thru a Dr. and within a matter of time will or can no longer afford the prices for pain meds will turn to illicit drugs? Do you realize 75% of so called junkies started out on prescription meds? And only turned to illicit drugs because they got cut off by their Dr? So please don't be so quick to judge because one day it could be a friend of yours that because of their chronic pain and left with no other option do the same as those you condemn! Valerie, I would be willing and more than happy to sign your petition. It's obvious that what's happened here is that the government; ie; the DEA and CDC weren't making as much money as the pharmaceutical companies or the doctors that were helping their patients so they "created" the "opioid epidemic", labeling every drug related death as an opioid overdose. The sad truth will probably never be unveiled which is the fact that since the DEA and CDC have cracked down on the entire country, the amount of withdrawal related deaths as well as suicides by patients in chronic pain has skyrocketed, and again are no doubt labeled as opioid related deaths when the DEA and CDC are causing people in pain to look for ANY relief possible, whether it is illegal or not! If you think that the Trump administration is going to help, I seriously doubt it. I believe that this is AMERICA, and that the government has NO RIGHT to tell the medical professionals what and how much to prescribe their patients, or threaten the pharmacists with retaliation if they fill a legitimate prescription, although they deny ever doing so! I could go on for hours but I don't have time. Please keep up with your petition. I'm certain that you will get more than enough signatures, although it may not do any good against a corrupt system!

I'll sign. I'm 47, had 7 failed Lamenectomy's. I had to turn to a Methadone clinic. Because the so called pain Doc's rarely would I see the same M.D where 10 of them had an office. Same location & name but each one had different ideas & amounts & even different drugs. So I got fed-up & went to a clinic. Call me a junkie, I don't care I've put up w/ level 5-6 pain every day since 1987. Don't judge until you've "walked a mile.."

I am SO afraid they're going to completely get rid of methadone. I took it for 15 years and never had one problem. I did everything right, was monitored closely by my primary, blood tests, etc., and they took me from 11 to a lousy 4 a day. I've tried everything ... Dilaudid, oxycontin, hydrocodone (I became immune to it), so after 15 years, and I'm 70 years old, so what if I did die from the so-called horrible methadone. For 15 years I lead a happy life; now I'm paying twice the amount I used to and getting half of the pain relief that if it hasn't killed me in 15 years, I highly doubt it will now. How can these government officials feel they know more than my doctor and especially the long relationship we've had. They interfered in an area they should have never went to as now the U.S. is a dictatorship. They now dictate what a very knowledgeable doctor can or cannot subscribe for their patients. THIS IS WRONG and whoever started it should be hung by their toenails from the nearest tree. I CANNOT FUNCTION AT ALL without my pain pills, but if my pain went away, I'm NOT addicted mentally. Without any pain, that would be "my high"!!

I have thought about this subject a lot because like so many millions of others rely on Kadian, Diclofenac and Oxycodone every day of my life and have for many years without them there isn't any doubt my life would be unbearable and suicide would take place very quickly.

What I wonder most is why so many are struggling to get the medical attention and medications they need.

I guess I am more fortunate than others in this respect as my doctors take very good care of me. The only time I have problems getting my meds is when I mess up and forget to phone in for refills on time as my doctors are very strict with policies.

I truly hurt with and for each person that needs this help and not getting it in a fair and timely manner.

Also I live in fear everyday of my life that lawmakers are going to take my medications away. It's all you hear is the bad things about Opiates. We don't ever hear about the success stories like mine. Without them I could not have ran three businesses and employee hundreds of people over my 35 year career as an entrepreneur. I did finally have to shut down all the businesses due to my health and now I financially struggle like everyone else which seems to make my health problems even worse.

Anyway my opinion is simply let's get organized and get a few leaders in place and make things happen. I am more than willing to step up and do my part if I can help with anything more than just a signature. {edited for privacy}.

I just signed the petition it worked just fine. I personally thank you all for supporting each other and the willingness to stand up for right and wrong. I am a US Army Vet and this is the very reason I served we stand tall, we stand strong and we stand proud but most of all we stand for what right and protect the rights of each other.

Did you ask him why he would not increase it ? If your doctor never looks you in the eye. You need to change doctors. Many years ago I went to a PCP that was so busy looking at her laptop screen she did not answer or look at me. After 15 minutes, I got up and walked out without telling her. I was at the elevator before she looked for me. (I could see the front desk from the elevator)

It is up to each doctor what they prescribe individual patients. Signing a petition will have no impact on what doctors do and do not prescribe.

I am a chronic pain sufferer. Needed a bump up in my meds by 20 milligrams. Doctor refused me for months. Could not even give me the respect I deserved by not even looking at me, just the computer. Never had a bad U/A.

Momo (# 8) -- I have severe damage to my spinal column due to not automobile accident. And just by terrible luck or the most horrible convergence of circumstances, I was uninsured. Lost everything I owned....... point being, no Insc=no legitimate pain clinics in Georgia. This was exactly at the time of the emergence of govt intervention in pain meds and PCP's no longer able to control pain. I knew everything was going to be just fine and aok. When has the federal government not gotten involved in anything and not improved it ten fold? Sorry, sarcasm is the last act of the desperate mind. This was in 2009. I believe that the government made their grand entrance into yet another place they had great intentions (I hope so anyway). I remember hearing about this beginning in 2008 as best as I remember. I knew that this was going to be a catastrophe of epic proportions. But it really didn't concern me at the time and in retrospect, the way I have been scolded, reprimanded like a disobedient school child, talked to like a drug seeking addict and the best of all is being told by the most reprehensible and loathsome creature to ever graduate from medical school, his suggestion for me as he spoke to me in a way that had I not been in excruciating pain from the 7 burst fractures in my spinal column and a crushed shoulder joint that has to have a joint replacement, and the maturity and ability to control my responses to being provoked, I would have beaten him so badly that he would have had to find a pain clinic for the lifelong chronic pain I would have caused him and very deservedly I might add. But the worst insult yet was from this physician dedicated to helping the sick, injured and in need of an empathetic and caring human being whose advise was for me to go to the local methadone clinic for heroin addits. This was clearly where I needed to be due to the fact that I was a junkie and he would not treat junkies. I apologize for the slight diversion from the subject, I just get rather triggered by this subject. And I despise that word for the simple fact it makes me sound like a 20 something that has just heard someone say something that makes me need a safe space and a quite room with therapy bunnies and ponies to pet to be able to recover. I feel like if these young people had to live with the debilitating chronic pain that the people on this site had to live with on a daily basis with out an hour in the day to have a minor reprieve from the pain, they really would be needing a therapy bunny to feel better. But I will return to the topic and stay on the path and not vear off on another wild tangent. But as you were saying, I came into this world of narcotics and pain meds and drug screens and pill counts as a complete neophyte to all of this. I drank enough beer in college to probably float an aircraft carrier but had long grown out of that phase without ever experimenting with any illegal drugs. So not only did I end up looking like a jack-o'-lantern on Thanksgiving day, but I also had to have a surgery to repair an anal fissure caused by the extreme constipation that also accompanies the use of opiates. It had got so bad that I literally tore myself internally. And that was a pain that had to be surgically repaired because no human being could possibly take that pain which came with a person's daily bodily function that every human being must do with some regularity. It was unlike the pain that I had with my back and shoulders that was bearable but constant. Probably a 5-6 if I do not do anything that I shouldn't. Like the daily chores that all adults have to do. And for a young healthy man that had a minimum of two jobs at all times since high school, it is a living hell that only my belief and personal relationship with my higher power that kept me from losing my mind completely and if I am being truly honest, it is God that kept me from doing something that would have left my family in pain for the rest of their lives. Now you are starting to see ads for companion medications to the opiates. The dry mouth rinse, gum and toothpaste. The prescription medication for relief from opiate induced constipation. And one last thing that no one has mentioned either, I got my first set of prescriptions from the "pain specialist" and I was in a state of disbelief. It was a cocktail of methadone scheduled, roxycontin 30mg for breakthrough pain as needed, 2mg Xanax times 3 daily and Soma. This was only because I refused to take the 80mg oxycontin for breakthrough pain so he dropped it back to the 30mg. And I asked him exactly how long would my liver and or kidneys withstand that much medication, and he told me that if I remained on that level and amount of meds, I would probably be looking at a kidney transplant and or a liver transplant also sometime in the next 8-10 years. So I used the meds just long enough to develop a dependancy on them before deciding that I had no clue how long it would be before I could get surgical intervention on my spine and shoulder and I couldn't do that anymore. So I flushed everything down the toilet because I was a man who had never been stopped by anything I decided to do. That is how I became the youngest real estate broker in my area before becoming the youngest person elected to public office in my county. And then being the top 40 under 40 in my County and state. And while doing all that, I had been acquiring 22 rental properties and being the top 5 producer in my real estate company in the commercial department in only three years. All of these things was considered extremely ambitious on there own, and all together was completely unheard of for someone who started cold without having the right last name in my town and no trust fund but completely by myself with grit and determination. So I refused to be captive to a bunch of pill bottles,so I flushed them because if I could do all I had done, I could do this. Well when I first remember being fully conscious 3 days later, I realized that maybe I had met my match. And it took me another two years to finally get off each one of the meds one at a time. With the methadone being the last. And I will say that if I have to go back to a pain med for my deteriorating back issues before I can have it repaired, I would go to methadone. It never made me get a high, and it was a very good pain medication. But only if you do not drink alcohol or use any benzodiazopines. The combination of a benzo, methadone and just one mixed drink or a beer and you will not live. But it is still a very effective pain med. I have gotten down to 4) 50mg tramadol a day and concerta for the fatigue and periodically a 75mg Lyrica. And I stay in my bed most of the day and do nothing of any help to anyone. But that is better than having to fight what everyone is fighting now. But I have to say that I worked my way through pre-med on the neuro-orthopedic floor of a level 2 trauma hospital. And got accepted to medical school but chose not to go. But by the time this happened to me, when I left the hospital, that was before the days of oxycontin, roxycontin and the panoply of opiates that had come on the market. That is the reason I didn't have enough sense to realize the amount of medication I was getting was more than patients with CA of the bone was getting when I worked at the hospital. And at the time, bone cancer was the most insideous, cruel fate that anyone could ever have to endure. And I said the amount that I was given, not taking. I didn't know until years later the reason why you could walk into the waiting room at the pain clinic and see the 50/50 split between the people who was there just to get the meds and the dealers. Because anyone who was a legitimate pain patient had insurance and was going to a reputable clinic. I was one of a handful of people that I met in the waiting room that was a legitimate pain patient. And the reason for the massive over prescribing was so people could have enough meds to sell half and take the other half and have the money to return the next month. That is what happens when the federal government gets involved in anything besides the defense of the country and providing the necessary infrastructure for people to be able to make their share of the American dream and occasionally having to regulate some industries. But something had to be done when 60,000 people were overdosing and dying every year. That is more soldiers that was killed in Vietnam. And the only reason most of them were dying of OD's is because of the physicians that were over prescribing for far too long and then abuptly stopping the opiates all at once. And I can say that if you don't have a tremendous burning desire to stop and help to wean off the medications, I have no doubt why so many people turned to a cheaper and easier drug to get, heroin. And all the while, the Sachler family that owns Purdue Pharma, the makers of oxycontin, they sold that med to physicians as a safe and less addictive alternative to other opiate pain medication knowing all the time how unbelievably addictive it actually was and extremely dangerous. And each member of that family is a multibillionaire. And the tobacco industry settled a class action law suit for several hundreds of million dollars and the Sachler family is trying to settle their class action law suit for far much less and none of them are ever going to be prosecuted criminally for all the death and destruction done to thousands of families all so they could enrich themselves. And they are responsible for the decimation of entire towns in coal country and the Midwest. So when NAFTA had closed the factories and the Obama administration nearly destroyed the coal industry, they stepped right up and gave these people who were already demoralized from not being able to find a job which causes severe depression, and then they magically was given Obamacare that gave them access to a physician who was more than happy to oblige their pain with the entirety wrong type of medication for the pain that these people were suffering. An opiate may make you temporarily forget the pain of losing all sense of reason and loss of purpose but it will always return when the meds wear off until time for the next dose. If you think that I am making spurious and unfair accusations against the Obama administration, just look at the calendar and do the math. Not everyone fits into this equation but I know that it played a role in my misery. Even though I couldn't even qualify for Obamacare in Georgia, I still was severely depressed at my circumstances and if I didn't have a higher power that is a million times more powerful than pain medication, I have no doubt that I would have been just another statistic. And I have to say that even though I have a legitimate reason to be taking pain medication and I may have to start again very soon, the people who are addicted just because they have an emotional pain instead of a physical pain, there is now more help for people who truly want to stop than I ever remember being available in my lifetime. So I have no doubt that it will be much more difficult to get the medications that I will need to have a decent quality of life, I am really happy that maybe I will not have to go through the mind numbing misery of withdrawals and the humiliation of physicians that would have been better suited to be veterinarians than medical doctors for fellow human beings. Something had to be done to get this under control, but as per norm, whenever the government gets involved in anything, there will be far more unintended consequences created than problems solved. And if the greedy physicians that have no compunction about turning their patients into drug addicts, if they were caught and made an example of, the business of pill mills would be a thing of the past. And then the government could go back to doing what they do best, raising taxes, waging unwinnable wars and over regulating industries that didn't have such a direct impact on a patient and their doctor.

Id like to know your definition of a “ bad apple.” If you mean addicted kids well then that would make you one as well, only adult size. Don’t start putting the blame of the addicts when you yourself were or are one. Definition of an addict no matter if back surgery, car accident, experimenting, you all have something in common called DEPENDENCY.
As for this Chinese virus, it is real but much overblown numbers by the democrats. My sisters a nurse my nephew an ER Doctor. They have told me things I cannot repeat because it’s like the twilight zone. There are other alternative medications besides opioids that work just fine. Most doctors will keep you on Percocet forever. And they don’t warn you either. So blame your doctor. I bet your one of those people who actually drive while wearing a mask. Get well soon.

Now is the time to act & we all must get strong! COVID19 is a horrific curse. Many death’s have occurred; very sad.

However, let’s do a comparison. As the “opiod crisis” as defined by Gov’t immediately, without researching, acknowledging nor considering LEGITIMATE/LONG TERM CHRONIC PAIN PATIENTS(CPP’s) who after exhausting all other procedures were given the only alternative in order to basically walk & lead a somewhat normal, productive life;

In my case 32 ago I couldn’t walk via a near fatal car accident, 4 surgeries later & numerous other alternatives, diagnosed with FAILED BACK SYNDROME, SPINAL STENOSIS, & all the rest that goes with a deteriorating spine w/scar tissue crawling like a spider web, 22 yrs ago I was referred to Pain Management through managed doses of opiate Percocet.

It was a miracle! Within a month, I was out of my wheelchair! Walking, living, positive...I got my life back! 22 yrs later BOOM! Along cane as we all know, the revelation of abusers...The bad apple!!

Because of so few “bad apples” vs us CPP’s we are suffering. Way too many CPP’s have even taken their lives; we are back bedridden due to GUIDELINES/RULES In lieu of this fact, Gov’t, FDA, DEA, et al refuse to acknowledge us & the knowledgeable, compassionate PAIN MGMT DOCTOR’s who did their research!

Granted, COVID19 is horrible. Gov’t is paying attention to fix. Why not us? We have a terminal disease which is CHRONIC PHYSICAL PAIN!

In addition, re: the tapering of our meds; have you noticed what we are prescribed the pain medicine has become basically ineffective as if taking a sugar pill? They changed the formulation, altered it less active ingredients & w/filler’s to make you purposely sick to detour use without any TRIAL’s whatsoever!

Bottom line is this now for us legitimate CPPs... Many of us have been tapered. The daily dose we do get if fortunate enough to have a compassionate Doctor, the medicine itself Percocet & all its generic formulations have been purposely altered for strength & added fillers to detour use & effectiveness as if we are taking a sugar pill. You can notice the difference, i.e. withdrawal symptoms after dose, extreme fatigue, zero motivation, no lift of mood/positivity (dopamine inhibitor), abdominal issues!

So weird how after long term use seemingly overnight these effects began once the "opiod crisis" was defined by Gov’t! (Circa 2016 to date...)
It's disgraceful! We are not stupid. They've tricked us all. This has been done secretly without any patient test trials... Think about it. We must stick together & fight back for our lives!

I’m afraid I won’t be able to function without my medication. It seems no one understands or cares about people who are truly suffering, day in and day out. Once th egg y allow people to get awarded big settlements from big pharmaceutical companies, they halt production of the meds . Of course most Doctors have stopped writing prescriptions for these meds already. I’m afraid if my current Dr . retires I’ll be screwed . I’m raising my grandchildren so I need these meds or I would most likely be unable to walk at all. This world is crazy when it comes to this.
