Help Me Help Him!!

My husband has been taking xanax for 30 years that what he tells me...I've been with him for 15 and he has taken it daily 2 times a day. He recently tried to cut the dose in half and that was a mistake...he was a mess! Now he's back to his regular dose. How can I help him stop??? Please help if you can!

Cutting back on Xanax after taking it for 30 years is really difficult because of the side effects that will occur... I have been on them 20 years (3 a day) and are about to commence to try with a specialist help because it is so dangerous to just stop them after taking this highly addictive drug for so long.. Your body becomes so used to it that it will not cope without it!! Be supportive but this one is to be monitored very closely by a professional.. Can let you know how I go when I see the specialist but I know it will be a long and sometimes very stressful time as it will not be successful without some reactions..He will be slowly changing me to another tablet that isn't addictive to replace the xanax so a long term treatment..

That is correct, after such long term use, it may be dangerous to try to stop Xanax on his own and he should seek medical assistance.

On top of being addictive and habit forming, a sudden withdrawal of Xanax, or lowering of the dosage may cause seizures, which could put his life in danger, thus it will have to be tapered very slowly.
