Help. Not Myself.

I have had horrible side effects for three days. I'm nauseous, I've thrown up and I've cried all day everyday for three days now. Im very unhappy with myself and I find myself coming home and going straight to bed. I'm tired non stop and very emotional. The doctor called me today and Now I'm hysterically crying. She was very adamant about me remaining on it for the entire month. She practically told me she couldn't guarantee what would happen and how long my period would be if I just stopped and that I would start as soon as I quit taking it. She claims it's completely natural and pretty much acted like she got these calls all the time. I'm damned if I do and damned if I don't. If I continue taking it, it's just getting more and more into my system. Which means It'll take longer for me to be back to myself. I cried on the phone to her and she told me I needed to finish the month. Yeaaa so my body becomes addicted to this. So I'm suppose to hate life for the next month. It's 10am and I've cried 3x since I woke up at 5am! Tell me what I'm suppose to do? The only reason i started was just bc im not regular every month and at 25 I found that odd. My period never last longer than 2 days and I have migraines occasionally. It really wasn't a reason to start BC but she thought my hormones were out of wack.

Hello, Tyra! How are you feeling? I'm very sorry about what you're going through.

First, I'll be entirely upfront and honest with you, no doctor can force you to take anything they prescribe, unless the person was a danger to others and being dosed under court order. Otherwise, if you are of sound mind, then it is entirely optional and you can decide what is best for you. You know yourself and your body better than any doctor possibly can, so you know when something isn't right.

That said, some mood swings and irritability can be side effects of hormonal contraceptives as listed by the FDA, but what you're describing sounds very extreme, which leads me to think that this might not be the right one for you to take.

You doctor was also not entirely honest, if this one is causing you such severe problems, she could switch you to a different one. You can switch in the middle of the pack, with no problems. There is no need to require you to finish the month, when it is making you this miserable.

Or you could stop taking it, knowing that you will likely start your period, when you do and it might be a little longer or heavier than normal.

As to your period being irregular, unless it is causing you problems, such as fertility issues if you're trying to get pregnant, then it is nothing to worry about and she should also have told you that. As long as your most recent pap smear was normal, then being irregular is no big deal and it happens to all women, especially when they're young.

Additionally, you should be informed that it is your right to go see a different doctor, if you feel this one is being unreasonable or not taking you seriously and I must admit that if a doctor acted that way with me, that's exactly what I'd do.

Is there anything else I can help with?
