Have There Been Recent Fda Changes To Oxycontin Cr?
UpdatedI have arthritis all over my body and am in constant pain. I was on Opana ER for years with good results until a month ago when the Dr decided to change it to Oxycontin CR. I went to pain management today and have been on Oxycontin 30mg CR for a month. It hasn't been working very well and I have been having tons of breakthrough pain. I told the Dr that we needed to increase the time release and she told me that the FDA recently made changes and that according to those changes I was on too strong of a dose and it needed to be lowered! I have searched all over the web and can find no info about any recent FDA changes. Has anyone else heard of this? By the way I have never in my life abused drugs and always take them exactly as directed.

New guidelines were issued last year by the DEA that requested patients be limited to no more than the equivalent of 120mgs of Morphine per day and some states have lowered it further to no more than the equivalent of 100mgs of Morphine a day. This was done to help prevent over prescribing.
If you've been given 30mgs of Oxycontin twice a day, that's equal to 90mgs of Morphine, which puts you right near the limit.
The only exceptions are supposed to be for people that suffer intractable pain due to a possibly fatal illness, such as stage 4 cancer.
If she prescribes more, your doctor risks losing her license to practice medicine.
I wish I had better news for you, but I don't. The new guidelines have been causing problems for people all over the U.S.
Is there anything else I can help with?
