Has Anyone Else Stopped Long Term Use Of Norethindrone (Top voted first)
UpdatedI was put on norethindrone when I was approx. 45 (11 years ago) to stop extremely heavy periods, in an attempt to avoid a hysterectomy. The drug worked well...I haven't had a period in the last 11 years. Problem is my endometrial lining has increased (I was evaluated - no problem) so a good suggestion was made to stop taking the norethindrone. I may be in menopause but diagnostics can't tell because the drug masks what's going on. I've been off norethindrone for a week today. No bleeding, cramps or anything. Just wonder if anyone else has been through this before. It's hard to find any data on the internet and the doctors don't really seem to understand effects from long term use. Thanks for any info that can be provided.

Anytime you use hormones, such as this one, it does increase your risk of developing certain cancers, according to the AMA. Other withdrawal effects may include irritability, headache, spotting, dizziness, cramping, and PMS-like symptoms.
Has anything changed, or are you still doing well?
Thank you for your note. Norethindrone actually helps to prevent uterine cancer; nonetheless it causes a whole lot of other issues. I've been off the drug 4 week as of yesterday and no problems, pains or bleedubg. I'm going to do an FSH evaluation in another 4 weeks (after 8 weeks off the drug) and go from there. My doctor says if I am menopausal we'll only concern ourselves if my bleeding stops again or pain, etc. It's interesting, if I ever missed 2 or 3 days, I would have a little bleeding. Nothing this time, in fact I feel better now in ways I didn't realize (e.g. I'm a lot calmer). I really think doctors didn't fully understand the long term effects of the drug. Happy New Year!
