Graves' Disease Involving Bulging Eyes

My mother is 86 years old and has Graves' disease. We heard that on rare occasions if you cough hard your eye can pop out. Is this true?

Sincerely,

Diana Christiana

Hello, Diana! How is your mom?

No, it is not true.

However, her disease should be being treated by her doctor, which may help lessen the bulging.

The bulge can also make it harder to keep her eyes moist, so she may need to use lubricating eye drops, or the dryness may irritate them, causing pain and itching, as listed by the NIH.

Is there anything else I can help with?
