Grateful For Feedback
UpdatedI am so happy to find this site. I have read many negative things about accutane and from many close friends some serious side effects from the drug. Sadly even a suicide. I took my 15 yo son to a dermatologist today to see if there were some treatments for scarring. I explained to her that I was NOT interested in accutane. She treated me like some uneducated mother who was causing her child long lasting distress from scarring. She brushed off the side effects and continued to tell my son how unhappy he would be if he didn't take accutane. That it would effect his future and his life in a negative way. I am infuriated, he has never been overly concerned about his acne. So angry. It was nice to come here for reassurance about my decision. I appreciate people taking the time to speak of their experiences. I am in Australia. They call accutane a "cure" here. Minimal side effects anyone saying otherwise is discounted. What a sad state our medical professionals are in that they don't acknowledge these problems. Even if the percentage is small (which it doesn't appear to be) if it is you or your child experiencing these problems it would be 1 too many. I would say the side effects from acne, scarring, does not outweigh the risks Involved with this drug. Hopefully people see beyond the scars, beyond Imperfections that many of us have and stop killing our kids for the sake of beauty. It was sad to read all the stories of chronic pain, depression many other things but thank you as you have maybe helped prevent someone else from having these issue from your experiences. :)

I just read your post and realize it is older, but so glad I saw it. Felt like I could have written it myself. Same experience here in the US with our dermatologist. We, unfortunately, succumbed to the sales pitch and pressure (it's your son's last resort; no other options... we were told). My 17 y.o. started generic Accutane six days ago. This will be his last day. No more. He happened to have an eye exam today and he was showing side effects of pinkish eye with red streaks. He has had no eye problems in past nor does he wear glasses or contacts... I just finally scheduled an eye exam. Opthamologist said he has cataracts in both eyes and made the statement he'd "never seen anything like this". He didn't want to say it was due to the Accutane - he couldn't as there was no base line to compare to. He said my son should stop Accutane immediately and that he was "not a good candidate for it". We got home and googled Accutane and cataracts and were shocked at what we found. I'd like to kick the "salesperson" (aka as a dermatologist). Every time we saw here with his cystic acne she pushed and pushed for Accutane saying what we read online is so far-fetched and fabricated, blah blah blah. I've lost all faith in her. My son does not have faith in this and said he'd rather live with acne than impair his vision. This drug has way too many side effects. I wish we had not weakened and give in to the dermatologist but trusted our own research and gut instincts. He will not be taking this drug tomorrow. Nor will we be going back to this drug-pusher dermatologist (actually just a P.A.; we never did see the actual "Dr.")
