Well I just really need to know if what I am doing is considered doctor shopping. I fell at at department store and injured my knee. Now I have to go to the doctor the lawyer sent me to. He prescribes pain meds for me but the only thing he can treat is my knee. I started having back problems. My primary care doctor sent me to a different doctor and he also gives me meds. But the pharmacy said they would call the doctors and tell on me. So I went and ahead and told the doctors myself so that it would not look as bad. What do you think will happen to me? The pharmacy refused to give me back my prescription. Can they do that?
Right. I got percocets for my tooth which the doctor literally went in and seen it was infected and gave me antibotics and Percocet. Then I went into urgent care because my legs was killing me and I couldn't move them they did xrays and discovered I have a pinched nerve in my power back so she gave me cyclobenxine and tylenol 3
Different meds from diff doctors for a diff thing are ok unless U go to a pain management dr. Idk about that. I get pain meds Percocet from my family dr for fibromyalgia but recently had oral surgery done and was able to fill a vicodin script from the oral surgeon with no problems. Different doctors for a different situation and different meds.
But our pharmacist here will not fill an rx of scripts if they are to soon to fill so yes here where I live will tell you I cant fill it. Also if the rx is from a different dr for a different situation and it's only for a short amount of time they will fill it
needtoknow, it is up to your dr is he wants to continue writting your pain meds. If you signed a Pain Contract agreeing to not have any other dr treat your pain, chance are you will be dismissed and you will find it difficult if not impossiible to find another dr to manage your pain. The pharmacist has no way of knowing what your dr will do. All the pharmacist can tell you is if you can get a prescription filled.
Ok I went through the same thing. My pain med doctor prescribe me a two months supply of pain meds but I went to my dentist and he gave me 15 pills on something called oxycodone. Then I have a pinched nerve in my back and that dr have me 15 Tylenol w/codeine not all in the same month though. I never heard of this before so I was very confused. So I asked my pharmacist who told me I was good because they're different meds for different things is that true?
Concerned patient , many states are connected to other states Prescription Monitoring Programs now. So you don't have to get a prescription filled in your state for your dr to find out about it.
I am worried because I go to a pain doc to be treated for endometriosis in Denver. I only take the meds for a week out of the month and my doctor gives me a few extra in case my cycle starts early. Well I travel constantly for work and ended up hospitalized in Portland for a kidney infection. I used up my extras because the infection was causing extreme pain in my back. The doctor in OR gave me a small amount to help me get through when I finally went to the hospital till the infection cleared. I just recently woke up with a recurrent infection in Kansas City and had to go to the urgent care because I needed antibiotics and 3 pain meds to help till the pain stopped and the antibiotics locked in. I have an appointment with my doctor tomorrow morning. My doctor yelled at me the last time I went to the hospital out of state because I didn't have them with me and I guess your not allowed to be prescribed additional meds. I have always been completely honest with her. I'm scared that I will get in trouble for filling two additional small scripts even though they were for a completely different issue. Since I wasn't in Denver I had no way to be seen or call her office for a script because it has to be a written prescription in the state you're in. I'm scared if I tell her she will fire me as a patient. I really need the narcotics when I'm on my period and cannot function without them. Do I tell her the truth. I filled both through my insurance although in different states. I know they check the state registry but do they check insurance records as well? I would prefer to be honest but I'm scared she will fire me as a patient. What do I do? Is it illegal to be treated for a seperate issue out of state and get a small script? I'm not trying to be shady but was extremely sick.
Sorry Keikee what BL wrote is relevant because doctor including dentists are required to check prescription monitoring board each time they fill a prescription in most states. Those states that leave it up to the doctor will not longer have that choice when some of these new laws are put into effect. Also just because they did not do it every single time does not means that they won't in the future. If someone is asking a question on whether or not something is considered doctor shopping then they most likely can use the information that BL provided. Maybe you just woke up on the wrong side of the bed today and is a little testy today?
I don't think you are in any legal trouble but having said that your primary could drop you especially if it is happening more than once or twice a year. Believe me you do not want that. The next time you see your primary or Before you have anymore dental work done you need to ask your primary if it is OK with him. If he says no then don't fill it. While dental pain is short lived and usually only lasts a day or two back pain is a different story. I talked to my doctor that is giving me my pain meds and asked her as soon as I got a prescription from her as to what to do in cases like this. She did not have a problem with it for dental or from an ER visit but that was a year or two ago. I am planning to have dental implants done in a few weeks and I will be asking her again by email message just to make sure she is still OK with it. Also getting the response by email protects me somewhat in case she forgets that she did say that it was OK for my dentist to give pain meds after having the dental work done. Remember the most important thing you can do to help your doctor trust you and to continue to prescribe pain medication for you is to keep your doctor in the loop when you anticipate you may need pain medication and not after you have filled it.
If you'd take the time to read what I wrote you'd see that what you're saying is not even relevant, bl. Who said anything about a pain contract?
Yes, BL. I'm well aware of all that. You can save your lessons for someone else.
Keikee , some ststes require all providers to check the PMP before prescribing a Schedule II drug, this would include dentists. The prescription being filled is what puts it on a patients PMP profile, It doesn't matter how it is paid form although states do require the method of payment as part of the info and it is listed on the profile. A patient does not have to sign a pain contract for a dr to decide to no longer prescribe pain meds if the patient has gotten a pain prescription from another dr. It all depends on the dr.
Concerned, Your dentist isn't going to check the pharmacy board's data base to see if you're filling scripts from multiple docs. Likely that your primary care doc isn't checking either. Where do you live that there's no schedule II monitoring data base? Do you pay cash for your meds or are you using insurance? How long have you been getting scripts from the pcp & the dentist? How much dental work can one person have?
Okay thanks! Just had no clue about this stuff. Didn't want to end up in trouble for doing this. It's not pain management, just primary doctor.
I fee like if it's for a diff issue n diff meds n the dentist is only a temporary thing where U need meds at times n if it's a diff med it's ok. As long as the primary dr is not a pain management dr. I get pain meds from my family doctor for 5 years for chronic pain w fibromyalgia. Occ I have seen an oral surgeon for extraction etc n have filled the 10-15 day pIn meds for that issue along w my reg meds n have had no problems.
Okay. So I just realized this could be an issue. I didn't do it intentionally but realize I could be considered as someone who doctor shopped. I've been on pain Medication for my lower back for quite some time. (Couple years) Over this time frame I've had some things done to my teeth. I've had root canals, wisdom teeth removal, more root canals, tooth infections. I've gotten pain meds from the dentist as well as my primary Doctor. When I go to the dentists (one gets me in when the other is too busy) they give me the scripts for the meds and I drop them off at the pharmacy close by because it's convenient and has drive through. When I get from my primary I go to the pharmacy closest to them. Just out of convenience again. Can me getting these pain meds for my tooth issues during treatment for my back issues get me in legal trouble? I had no idea this was an issue until I started to think about it and do some research. I wasn't "shopping" I was going to doctors for the issues other than the back and they fixed it. Which resulted in multiple procedures at the dentist to get these issues fixed, so it wasn't made up tooth pain. I actually had a lot to be fixed with my mouth during taking pain meds for my back. I don't want to get arrested because of what this looks like. I love somewhere that doesn't have a prescription monitoring program. But I'm still concerned I could get in trouble for it looking like I was shopping for pain meds. I take two norco 5/325 a day for my back. However that doesn't touch when a tooth is infect or when you get impacted teeth. I didn't tell my dentist I was already taking the meds simply because they didn't ask and I didn't see it being an issue being the amount of pain my mouth was giving me was not controlled by that twice a day.
That will depend on the new doctor.and the question while he was writing out the prescription did you tell him that you just got some opiate medications filled. If yes then you are fine. If no and you filled the script and took the pills from both script he could drop you. If you still have the pills from the other doctors don't use them so you can show the doctor that you did not take them after he prescribed you a different medication. It all depends on the doctor and whether or not you took both prescriptions without your new doctor knowing.
Thanks, Nancy! For conveying what I was trying to but couldn't seem to get the thoughts or words together to do it. Hormonal probably. Me, that is.
Most likely they won't let U fill the script from UR new doctor at the pharmacy till its been a month since the last one was filled if it's the same med n dosage. I woukdnt try to full the new script early.
Johnny, So, as long as you're not filling too early or lying to your new Dr then you're good. I might be a tad confused about your question.
