Getting Prescriptions From 2 Different Doctors For Pain Meds But There Are Conditions (Page 3)
(Newest replies first)

Well I just really need to know if what I am doing is considered doctor shopping. I fell at at department store and injured my knee. Now I have to go to the doctor the lawyer sent me to. He prescribes pain meds for me but the only thing he can treat is my knee. I started having back problems. My primary care doctor sent me to a different doctor and he also gives me meds. But the pharmacy said they would call the doctors and tell on me. So I went and ahead and told the doctors myself so that it would not look as bad. What do you think will happen to me? The pharmacy refused to give me back my prescription. Can they do that?

Tammy, I live in Florida, but I also know that most States would prefer you go to a pain clinic. This way they can cover all your pain medicine needs. The law is into checking multiple Drs. providing you pain medicine. Most Pain Clinics will work with you to alleviate your pain. As a person in recovery it is a fine line to walk. I held off for 15 years in recovery with moderate to severe pain because I did not want to get hooked on pain meds. A doctor I knew who was in recovery pulled me aside and said, "Ron if you take the medicine as prescribed, not saying to yourself, 'well 2 will be better' that is called abuse which can turn into addiction. There is a difference between "physical dependence' and 'addiction.' With the physical dependence you are not watching the clock and waiting for the next dose is and you are fixated on this. Physical dependence is that you take the medicine sometimes hours after the next dose. I have been on pain meds for 18+ years and there are days I don't take my complete daily dose. I had surgery on my neck 1/16 and was able to cut the dose down. If your not in pain management have your Dr refer you to one and stick with one pharmacy. I haven't had a problem and continue to go to my recovery meetings. Hope this helps

Tammy,
As long as it's self pay cash and no funding sources are being double billed.Regardless of it being a cds your suppose to disclose what your taking to each individual provider. With pharmacy laws changing all the time it's probably not worth it.

Jess,

My heart breaks for you as I too suffer from a similar situation.Im ashamed to disclose that I was reduced to seeking relief from a methadone clinic.Sadly more people than you can imagine have been forced to go this route.I certainly wouldn't recommend that but for me it was that or end up ending it all. I wish I had an answer but sadly things appear to be only getting worse I wish I had An answer, But you are far from being alone.God speed....

I would assume you could if it's not a controlled drug. But the it's according to what they are.

I have a semi- related question. can you do this, use 2 scripts from 2 different doctors, if the script is for a prescription electrolyte supplement, not a controlled drug?

Bl, thank you for your response. I don't have unbearable pain everyday and choose advil are 1600 mg about for times a day. 98 percent of time. Only when I have a severe injury so I need something a bit stronger. I do go my pcp regularly along with a orthopedic doc. Bit there is nothing the can do for the dilocations. Jason to be handled under sedation. I know how it looks but my situation severe. Cousin this be looked as doctor shopping?

Worried, it might be. Why don't you have a regular doctor or a pain management doctor for your pain meds ? The ER's are not going to continue prescribing opiates for your pain indefinitely. Going to different ER's is suspicious.

Hi bl...I have a question...so I have charcot-marie-tooth disease. This makes my lower limbs very weak and over the past 9 months I dislocated my ankle 15 times...had to go to er everything for a reduction. I also went to the ers that were closest at the moment because the pain was severe and I needed treatment fast. All of this was proven on xrays. Most of the time they gave me prescriptions for opioida dometimes more than twice a month but they never overlapped. The quantities were never more than a 2 or 3 day supply. Could this be condidered doctor shopping?

After speaking with my sister she said the correct year when this happened was 2009. I had the year wrong. The doctor was Dr. Moffet, he would make home visits when needed. He was a kind man. I live in a little town most have never heard of. This doctor would come to your home especially if you were of age. The town consists of mostly family, most that come this way said it reminded them of town....Andy Griffith show. We are proud of this town although most could not adjust to living here. I would say there are about 30-35yrs behind this town. We grow everything here and i tell you almost everything. Just wanted to correct mistake after speaking with my sister.

Rarely when opiate medications get stolen does the doctor replace the prescription. This was about 7 years in FL but this one patient came into the doctors because she lost her pills due to their house burning down. She lost everything and even had a slight smell of smoke along with paperwork from the fire department and Red Cross. They did not care and would not fill her prescription. They could have easily made copies of the paperwork if anyone would question the prescription but I guess they did not want to bother with it since it might have taken them an extra 3 minutes of paperwork. While this did not happen to me the writing on the wall told it was time for a new doctor.

Zawawa, a doctor replacing a prescription for pain meds when they have been stolen, even if a police report had been made, is highly unusual. Your mother was fortunate.

My mother had problem few years back her grandson came for visit...unannounced and took her pain meds. Her doctor did give her another prescription but she had pay for them. Her insurance company by law could not pay for meds twice, they stated. She paid money from her savings for meds. She could not prove anything and refused call law. She was 86 at the time. So if this may happen to you, have prescription filled but you will have pay for them yourself. Hope this help. Not that educated on narcotics but shared personal experience through mom.

BL, yes I could have taken the percocet in less than 8 hours, and then I would be out before time to refill. I had severe pain, the orthopedic doctor knew I was on monthly pain meds. I didn't lie and I didn't ask for them. I have never lied about my meds and never used but 1 pharmacy. I took them for 2 months only for breakthrough pain. I have never ever doctor shopped or lied about my meds to anyone. I did get a new doctor who understood my situation. All he had to do was look at my record from the past. But he explained that I couldn't ever accept another prescription from another doctor without him agreeing to it. I understand that now, I did not know it was wrong because it was for an emergency situation. Even my home health nurse said I needed something for breakthrough pain. I don't abuse my meds or the privilege of receiving them. I have never doctor shopped.

Holy crap i did that TOO and then the stupid *****s who were injecting me were telling my caseworker that i abused my meds and had me cut off for years...i just got them back and now only get 3 a day instead of 4 and a lower dose AND the DR gives me U/A's, OMG WTF? i can't wait to move to COLORADO, but then i will have a whole mountain of other things to overcome and wonder if i'll get my meds there? it's awful how they treat the folks who honesty clearly need them. I'm about to have a multi cervical disk replacement, first up, later in the lower lumbar, plus i have fibromyalgia and migraines, and my DR seems to have amnesia and a dislike for cannabis.

I did not hide anything from the doctor. He knew I was on pain meds. I have never doctor shopped or abused my meds. Yes the pain was that severe. Yes I did find a doctor and explained the truth to him and yes I did get my normal pain meds. I only got 2 perscriptions from the orthopedic doctor. He has not released me as of today. I only have my monthly pain med now, I only took the other ones for 2 months.

Patricia, you should not have been treated for pain by two different doctors.

You were prescribed two immediate release opiates. Precocet 10 is an immediate release pain med and can be take a often as every 4 hours. Norco is an immedicate pain med and can be taken as often as every four hours. Break through meds are for when a patient is taking an extended release pain meds.

I have no idea why your primary told you to take the percocet once every 8 hours, unless he didn't think you pain was constant. I also have no idea why your ortho prescribed you Norco to take with the percocet. It is not the responsibility of your ortho dr, or any other dr, to check with your primary and be sure it is alright if you take another pain med along with the percocet the primary prescribed. You will find it difficult, if not impossible to find another doctor to write your pain meds because it appears you are doctor shopping.

Debbie, your primary can prescribe you pain meds, if he wants to. But, that does not mean that you are not breaking your Pain Contract with your pain dr. You should have called your pain dr if your pain was so bad the meds you were prescribed by him were not helping. Going to your primary for additional pain meds makes it appear that you are abusing your pain meds and doctor shopping. It is highly doubtful you will be able to find a doctor that will write your pain meds.

When a patient receives pain meds from one doctor and/or has signed a pain contract, it is up to the patient to follow the pain contract or the doctors rules. It is not up to any other doctor to ensure you do what you have agreed to do by signing the pain contract.

Debbie I honestly don't understand this. My primary doctor cannot treat a broke shoulder and a fractured foot. My orthopedic doctor have me a lower dose of Marco, 7.5 for breakthrough pain between the 8 hours of taking percocet 10' s. An orthopedic doctor is a specialist for broke bones and so forth. It was only temporary, for 2 months. I have never doctor shopped or used more than 1 drug store. I had been using her for about 6 or 7 years. When I went back for my primary visit for my monthly percocet, she refused to fill it. Said she couldn't ever fill it again. Needless to say I was lost and confused. I hadn't done anything wrong. I told my orthopedic doctor that I was talking percocet 10, but he said I couldn't go 8 hours without pain meds for breakthrough pain. Even my home health nurse told me the same thing. I am 68 years old and I have a lot of back, neck, hip and leg problems. It's not by choice I am like this, because I hate being in this quality of life. It's not a life at all. I can't even make a bed or sweep a floor. Chronic pain is no life, and it's every day I deal with it. I am never pain free. People judge you when they can't see it on the outside, but if they had to walk in someone's shoes that has chronic pain for 1 day, just maybe they could feel a little bit of what we deal with on a daily basis. My heart goes out to anyone that has to cope with chronic pain.
