Getting Prescriptions From 2 Different Doctors For Pain Meds But There Are Conditions (Page 26)
UpdatedWell I just really need to know if what I am doing is considered doctor shopping. I fell at at department store and injured my knee. Now I have to go to the doctor the lawyer sent me to. He prescribes pain meds for me but the only thing he can treat is my knee. I started having back problems. My primary care doctor sent me to a different doctor and he also gives me meds. But the pharmacy said they would call the doctors and tell on me. So I went and ahead and told the doctors myself so that it would not look as bad. What do you think will happen to me? The pharmacy refused to give me back my prescription. Can they do that?
Mongo, I agree. Unfortunately, people who have chronic pain would have trouble getting to Washington because of their pain. I can not believe the pain Americans have to deal with now, just because others abuse opiates and even die from them. Why should those of us who would take these drugs responsibly have to suffer, it is a "crying" shame. I can not find a doctor in Northern California who will prescribe Norco, so I continue to take expired pills and hope to find one before I run out. Don't take them as often as I should, have to wait for the pain to become unbearable and the tears start to flow.
Opp, signing a Pain Management Contract does not mean other doctors can't prescribe you pain meds. It means if you get a prescription from another doctor for a pain med, your pain management doctor may dismiss you. Then you would have a difficult if not impossible time trying to find another doctor to manage your pain.
A Pain Contract is between a patient and the doctor that requires you sign it. Other doctors know nothing about what specific Pain Contracts say or don't say. Other doctors will lose nothing if a patient breaks a pain contract.
It is against the law for a pharmacist to fill a Schedule II prescription and not report it to the State Prescription Monitoring Program within the time specified in State Law.
Yes this is considered Dr. shopping and yes the pharmacy can take the prescription and keep it. It is always better to tell each Dr. your dilemma/pain meds. I have been doing this for 18 long years. On another note, I recently started Medical Marijuana in Florida. After 18 years of opioids what a difference. The insurance companies as of now will not cover it, so it is cash. But I am finally getting my life back as far as quality. If you are looking for a high you will be disappointed. Taking time to get off of the opioids was worth it and my pain is minimal.
It's only Dr. Shopping ifnu are illigally doing itnif its for dif reasons u can get it bc I went to the dentist n he wrote me than the hospital n they wrote em
Hi,
This is 2017. Wake up people. This is illegal getting two different prescriptions from two different doctors. This is called deception to obtain a dangerous drug. And you could possibly go to jail for this. And I'm actually mad about it. Because I do it the right way. It's people like you why people like us cannot get our prescriptions properly. Shame on you. Everything has a paper trail. You cannot beat the system any longer. Game over. You have to do it the right way just like we are. I just cannot believe someone would think in 2017 that you could possibly even think to get away with getting two different narcotics from two different doctors. Use your brain people, wake up people. Or if you don't you will be behind bars. This is definitely against the law and it is a felony. Stop doing this.
Hi,
You just need to stop. Because you will get caught eventually. Everything comes to an end. Just stop. Because people like you make it hard for people like us that are doing it the right way. Please stop.
In the State of Washington if you have a "CONTRACT"for pain meds from a doctor you can't get pain meds from another without Consulting with that doctor. If you do NOT have a Contract for pain meds with ANY doctor I believe you can get pains meds from more than one doctor. I would however check it out first by going to the Washington State Medical Board just to be sure. They most likely wouldn't do anything to you but advise you of rule for this. I take pain meds and have a Contract with a pain management specialist. One day I went to my own doctor and I had run short so she prescribed me a few to get me over till my next appointment.
When I went to see the Specialist she mentioned it and I could not do that even if she was my Primary Doctor. So please check first. Good Luck and Fast Healing.
Debbie, doctors will look up patient profiles in State Prescription Monitoring Programs before prescribing an opiate. It is up to each doctor fs they want to prescribe an opiate to a patient that another doctor is or has prescribed opiates to. It is up to each doctor that has a pain contract how they deal with patients that break them. Calling the State Medical Board won't do any good.
Hi~
I refuse to help anyone break the law Doctor shopping is a felony. You will go to jail. Grow up and stop it. Like I said I will not help you break the law ... I'm so done. Grow up people. Wake up and smell the coffee.
So, have a question that I've been DYING to ask for a few days now....
What is a "professional" nurse ? As opposed to an "unprofessional" nurse?
I don't get it. Aren't we ALL "professional"? Did I miss that part in Nursing school? I' m confused.
Hi Nikki~
As you said it's only doctor shopping. It's against the law. Let us all know after you are in jail for a while. If you're still going to say it's only doctor shopping. It's no big deal. I went to the dentist. Like wow. Grow up and stop it. You're hurting people that need medication. This is why they have to do prescription Pharmaceutical profiles on everyone. Because of Doctor shopping. Just please stop for your own good and it would help us out a lot as well. Good luck to you. Please stop.
Re: BL (# 502)
I have been with my pain management for over a year, my primary doctor hd alwys prescribed my meds. My pain doctor from the beginning was not really treating my pain. I recently had back surgery and a month prior , my pain doctor up my meds to oxycodone 10, I informed him, I was to have back surgery. On the day of my procedure, on our way home, we filled the prescriptions my surgeon gave to me, muscle relaxers and oxycodone with tylenol...my pain doctor for no clear reason, than that above, stated i breached my contract, nevermind the fact in the last 15 years, I have never asked for anything early, always by the book. So now Im trying to heal from back surgery without any help..Now what Im not understanding is why the pharmacy lets me have both, Is that not illegal?
Sandy (# 3) I started out by needing knee surgery, while waiting it became obvious I had a pinched nerve in my neck and ended up having spinal fusion (PCPwas writing for Percocet up until my neck surgery) after the surgery, as usual the spine surgeon assumed my pain medication for 3 moths and it fell back to my PCP, until I was ready for my knee surgery to which point my knee surgeon took it over. How in the world would this be Dr Shopping?
Hi,
I had a neck fusion. And I'm also in pain management. I also told the surgeon that did my next surgery that I was in pain management that I couldn't take any prescriptions from him. So when I left the hospital he gave me a prescription for Percocet 5. At the time I was taking Lortab 7.5. So that was a while ago. And my pain medication was not touching my neck. So I called my pain doctor and they said have someone bring up that prescription and we will write you something stronger. Oh they sure did. They gave me oxycodone 30s. I was taking Roxicodone 4 times a day Lortab 7.5 6 times a day. Until I finally said should I be off of one or the other. And they said yes you can get off of the Lortab 7.5. I was so messed up on medication that it was so unreal. I'm not taking anything but a low dose of Percocet now. Some doctors. The pain doctor that was prescribing me the Roxicodone he is no longer practicing. He was over medicating so many patients. Just be careful.
Re: Audra (# 513)
Did you inform your pain management doctor your surgeon wrote you a prescription for pain meds immediately after getting them filled ? What did your pain management doctor say when you asked him how you needed to go about managing your pain immediately after surgery ? Your Pain Contract states your pain management doctors rules. You should have requested a copy of it for your records when you signed it.
Yep, that's considered 'Doc Shopping' and imagine what the pharmacy thinks !
You are obviously a Work Comp patient and very lucky you don't live in CA. Here State Comp WC does not by law pay for any pain meds. So, my spouse who wears a Butrans Patch and we pay $50 every month. If this is happening in CA, believe it's coming to a state where you are. If that happens, Methadone is VERY inexpensive.
Re: Verwon (# 1)
I got the same exact exact from 2 different drs.but wasn’t aware of it because the 2nd rx Had the Nb name and the other had generic name. They gave the rx back to me and didn’t tell me they were calling the docs. How can I know if they did? How did they know did they check? Or did the system just tell them?
Re: myrtlesc01 (# 23)
Mind your own business.
That’s your sisters husband, not yours.
Chronic pain and illness changes people.
If you’re afraid of him stay away from him. Messing with his healthcare isn’t smart of kind.
Re: C Earle (# 6)
You are so wrong, and telling people something that can actually cause them to be locked up! I do not care what state YOU live in; just as most everyone has stated, IT IS ILLEGAL TO DR SHOP & It doesn't matter what pain(s) you have or how many, you cannot get narcotic pain meds from 2 different docs- no DEA has told you this; if it wasn't so serious I would be cracking up; YOU talked to the DEA and they told you, you can ..... lol
