Getting Prescriptions From 2 Different Doctors For Pain Meds But There Are Conditions (Page 25)

Updated

Well I just really need to know if what I am doing is considered doctor shopping. I fell at at department store and injured my knee. Now I have to go to the doctor the lawyer sent me to. He prescribes pain meds for me but the only thing he can treat is my knee. I started having back problems. My primary care doctor sent me to a different doctor and he also gives me meds. But the pharmacy said they would call the doctors and tell on me. So I went and ahead and told the doctors myself so that it would not look as bad. What do you think will happen to me? The pharmacy refused to give me back my prescription. Can they do that?

Worried, it might be. Why don't you have a regular doctor or a pain management doctor for your pain meds ? The ER's are not going to continue prescribing opiates for your pain indefinitely. Going to different ER's is suspicious.

Bl, thank you for your response. I don't have unbearable pain everyday and choose advil are 1600 mg about for times a day. 98 percent of time. Jason to be handled under sedation. I know how it looks but my situation severe. Cousin this be looked as doctor shopping?

I have a semi- related question. can you do this, use 2 scripts from 2 different doctors, if the script is for a prescription electrolyte supplement, not a controlled drug?

I would assume you could if it's not a controlled drug. But the it's according to what they are.

Jess,

My heart breaks for you as I too suffer from a similar situation.Im ashamed to disclose that I was reduced to seeking relief from a methadone clinic.Sadly more people than you can imagine have been forced to go this route.I certainly wouldn't recommend that but for me it was that or end up ending it all. I wish I had an answer but sadly things appear to be only getting worse I wish I had An answer, But you are far from being alone.God speed....

Tammy,
As long as it's self pay cash and no funding sources are being double billed.Regardless of it being a cds your suppose to disclose what your taking to each individual provider. With pharmacy laws changing all the time it's probably not worth it.

Tammy, I live in Florida, but I also know that most States would prefer you go to a pain clinic. This way they can cover all your pain medicine needs. The law is into checking multiple Drs. providing you pain medicine. Most Pain Clinics will work with you to alleviate your pain. As a person in recovery it is a fine line to walk. I held off for 15 years in recovery with moderate to severe pain because I did not want to get hooked on pain meds. A doctor I knew who was in recovery pulled me aside and said, "Ron if you take the medicine as prescribed, not saying to yourself, 'well 2 will be better' that is called abuse which can turn into addiction. There is a difference between "physical dependence' and 'addiction.' With the physical dependence you are not watching the clock and waiting for the next dose is and you are fixated on this. Physical dependence is that you take the medicine sometimes hours after the next dose. I have been on pain meds for 18+ years and there are days I don't take my complete daily dose. I had surgery on my neck 1/16 and was able to cut the dose down. If your not in pain management have your Dr refer you to one and stick with one pharmacy. I haven't had a problem and continue to go to my recovery meetings. Hope this helps

Ron,

Very well presented post I have a question since I too am in recovery and on occasion require a limited dose of an opiate to control my chronic pain condition. Are you forthcoming to your fellow addicts in your recovery program because I know the general consensus is if your in recovery use of opiates regularly is considered taboo by many many recovering addicts. I was just curious to how you view that.
Best wishes, Zed.

From my experience Pharmacists can do whatever the hell they please. That includes not filling valid prescriptions in a timely manner. How could it be that my insurance company sends me to a pain specialist and more than two weeks later I still have not been able to get my prescription filled for pain medication. Every damn Pharmacy tells me "we don't carry that or they don't feel comfortable filling for me."

I'm so fed up I can't even think straight! Death!! is sounding better and better!

I quit looking for my medicine now I'm looking for a plan.

Yes, my home group knows that I am on pain meds. Some of them balked, but once they heard what I said then they understood. Some people may not think it is not ok to take pain meds, but that is their problem. As I stated the is a difference in Physical Dependence and addiction. I was told by a M.D. in the program after 15 years in recovery that physical dependence is when you have a prescription you follow as written and do not waiver you will not be come addicted. Abuse then addiction comes when you say to yourself 2 is better than 1. Or even someone that has just got some relief for the first time. Most of the people in recovery around me often send someone to me new in recovery about pain meds. It has worked for me for the past 18 years. I will be celebrating 33 years in recovery on Feb. 10, 2017.

We need to form an organization of chronic pain patients and actually go to Washington with all our horror stories and explain to everyone that will listen to us how r lives r being ruined because *****s decided to use these drugs to feel high and whacked themselves!!! Now, it is us, the people that need this medication to survive, that always pays the price!! Always the innocent that suffer because of the action of dopes!!?? TRAY, I WOULD DO WHATEVER IT TAKES FOR U TO FEEL BETTER AND LET EVERYONE ELSE GO TRUCK THEMSELVES!!! THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IT IS TO LIVE IN CHRONIC PAIN, WHICH IS ANOTHER STORY ALL TOGETHER!!!

Betsy Ross, if a prescriptioin is filled, your doctor can look it up on your state Prescription Monitoring Program Profile. Pharmacists don't call doctors about prescriptions that aren't filled.

Mongo. it would not make any difference. It is still up to each doctor to prescribe for their pateints what they think is best in their professioinal judgement. Politicians aren't going to waste their time with chronic pian patients that can't find doctors that will prescribe what they want for their pain. The vast majority of chronic pain patients that take low doses of opiates and go by their doctors rules do not have any problems

Please do NOT Doctor shop as this is a sure way to make the medical community have serious trust issues with you as a patient.

Find a good doctor and stick with him/her. You must remember this is one of the most important relationships in your life. I have a rock solid relationship with all of my doctors. We do get into arguments once in a great while but they know me and they know they can trust me as I have demonstrated this to them over the years. I do what they ask of me and more. When we do not agree on something I talk with them about it and we normally arrive at a solution we are both comfortable with.

I want to be clear, I understand you and why, but it's a very bad idea. Please stick with your doctor unless it's a bad relationship but remember ALL worthy relationships take time and effort.

I take Kadian 40 mg daily, 100mg diclofenac and 4 oxycodone 15 mg daily. Every few years one of the drugs has to be increased but my doctors take care of me and I make sure I meet their strict demands always. I am given U/A's occasionally and I never ever mind since I take meds as prescribed and am always willing to let them count or audit my meds if they ever want to. I also take my meds with me every month just in case there is any questions, so we can take care of it on the spot. I am prepared. If I may suggest to everyone be organized and prepared for your doctors visits. They appreciate your help. It's your life and your responsibility to help your doctors help you.

Not at all, unless you signed a contract with a pain management physician doctors can prescribe you whatever they see fit. If your having the medications filled at different pharmacys than you having taken it to another level to trying to deceive the medicine community. Hopefully no one does there paper work and you won't get caught. Now if you did give them the same pharmacy. The dr office is 100% supposed to pull your chart of medications currently perscribed to you. So they probably did that and saw your medication list and didn't see a problem prescribing more

They can. In Florida even the police can check and see if meds are over prescribed. I live in Port St Lucie, FL and a well known pharmacy chain were in trouble. The had filled over 1 million Oxycodone (percocets). I have been on pain management for over 18 years. For me in Florida it is the only safe way to go unless you are taking them for something other than pain. I have just been granted access and qualified for medical cannabis from the state and a Dr. who can prescribe. There is no smoking form nor high THC. I am just looking for other relief and to get off the opioids. I am not looking to feel high. After 18 years of pain management with opioids I am ready to try something different.
