can i take gentilax if im pregnant for consipation?

Hi miriam,

According to a clinical trial posted on PubMed, "phenolphthalein treatment in pregnant women associates with a higher risk for Hirschsprung's disease in their children, but this finding is only a signal which needs confirmation or rejection in other studies."

NOTE: this drug is labeled under Pregnancy "Category C" meaning - Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.

With all that said, I would probably consider some (natural) dietary options for treating constipation as opposed to any prescription medications. Just to play it safe.

To be honest, if it were me, I would not take it. The active ingredient is listed as being Phenolphthalein (I'm not even going to try to pronounce that!).

This ingredient is slowly being removed from these types of products to the concerns that it causes cancer, thus there's the fear that you would be putting yourself and your baby at risk.

When I ran into when I was pregnant, I found the best and safest thing to use were the natural fiber laxatives, they are also much gentler. They should be safe to use, unless your doctor has specifically told you not to take them.
