Generic Ambien & Ambien Cr

As of Dec 2010, both Ambien & Ambien CR 6.25 mg are available in USA as generic. For some reason the FDA didn't approve the 12.5 mg CR version.

The pharmacy I use in India won't sell any versions of any hypnotic. They must be afraid people will abuse them.

Well, even in the U.S. there are concerns about abuse and addiction, so it is only approved for the short-term treatment of insomnia and is usually only prescribed to be taken, as needed, for 4 to 6 weeks, at most.

It has also been known to cause some problematic side effects, such as: hallucinations, memory loss, sleep eating and impairment of judgment.
