Gas Build Up

Updated January 10, 2013

I have been on Rabeprazole for over a year now and occasionally I get a large build up of gas in my stomach which causes considerable pain/discomfort, as sometimes burping is also difficult. Is this a common side effect or should I be concerned?

Rabeprazole can cause some gas as a side effect, but if you're taking it every day and only experiencing the gas occasionally, then it might not be what's causing the problem for you.

Learn more Rabeprazole details here.

Thus, I'd suggest looking into other possible causes.

Are you doing anything else different on the days you get gassy?

Are you drinking more coffee, or soda than usual?

Maybe just gulping drinks? Eating salad? Dark leafy greens? Or a lot of soft, yeast breads?

Are you on any other medications? Do you have any other medical conditions?

There are many things that can cause such gassiness and it's really a matter of figuring out what does it and how to avoid it in the future.

If it's safe for you to do so and you're allowed to take it, then you may want to try an over the counter gas relief product that contains Simethicone.

Learn more Simethicone details here.

I had severe gastritis and have learned that there are certain foods that will make my stomach start acting up again and some of them create very bad gas, which makes it even more painful, so I avoid them as much as possible. However, sometimes, there is something I haven't eaten in a long time that will surprise me, so I almost always keep some on hand, just in case. Having your stomach basically turn into a giant ulcer from gastritis is severely painful and I try to keep it as tame now as I can!
