Gabapentin Ok For What

i had shoulder surgery 2 days ago and it is very painful. i have lots of this med left from when it was originaly prescribed for deep pain in 1 of my legs. i was told that a nerve that was too deep in my leg could not be accessed and this would help. my concern is if i take it now could it help with the pain from my shoulder surgery. or is it not a good idea

Have you consulted your doctor about what you should take for the pain?

Lyrica is not actually an analgesic, so it won't help immediately with pain, such as that which occurs after surgery. It is an anticonvulsant, which can also help with certain types of nerve pain, but for it to do it must be taken consistently for several weeks, before it really has much of an effect.

funny you should mention that! it has now been since December 29th when I had my spurs removed and my rotator cuff repaired and it has not gone well. Can hardly move now for the pain. Have had to endure costly non effective Physical Therapy. Several more appointments with the surgeon who just keeps saying he did a good job. I do not mean to question his skill. It is just that something really big is wrong and now I am afraid of losing use for ever. Have also paid for 2 more MRI's. Then the Ortho surgeon said it was a compression in my neck and sent me to a neuro doc which took 10 days. every one of those days was spent in a chair day and night trying to not move. The Neuro guy immediately said it was not my neck, it is my shoulder and promptly sent me back to guess who? That is right - the same guy who did the operation and just says he fixed it. Now I have been sent to a "Pain" doctor who has just given me a script for Lyrica and the 6 days I have been waiting for it the dam drug store will not release it and we dont know why but I am going without it and it takes a long time to work. Am in such high degree of pain now and they will not give me pain meds. Honestly thinking of going back to Canada to see my 20 year family doctor who will at least load me with T4 until my arm and shoulder gets fixed. So do I ask new pain doc if I can take gabapentin?

how ironic! after going almost a week without the new prescription for Lyrica my insurance apparently will not cover it and it took the drug this long to figure it out. So instead of Lyrica guess what new drug was prescribed in place of it? None other than Gabapentin!
