Gabapentin, A Generic For Neurontin.

Updated

I found some of these in a baggie, are they used for recreation or do they have any kind of effect that would make someone take them that do not have the prescription

Neurotion is not a recreactional drug. It is used primarily for Seizures but has alternate uses. It will not produce a high of any kind.

Neurontin gives no effects of getting high. It is also prescribed for chronic pain. I don't know all the details but if it is a teen and they thought the pills were for pain they might be thinking that the pills are in the opiate category to get high which is a total misconception. This drug can be dangerous if not used correctly. I personally took it for pain and found no relief so my Dr. kept increasing the dosage until I was on the maximum dose. I went into kidney failure and was quite ill for some time. If a medication is not prescribed----get rid of it!

Thank you, I wish I could get rid of them. They were in an apartment during inspection and I could not touch them.

Neurontin, which contains the active ingredient Gabapentin is used to treat seizures and some types of nerve pain.

It HAS, however, been abused, mainly because it can cause some feelings of dizziness, so people think they are getting a high, plus since they think it treats pain, they think narcotic and keep taking more and more to try to find that opiate high, which of course, doesn't happen.

Bonnie, you could take them to your local drugstore and they will usually dispose of them for you, free of charge.

I had asked for a substitute pain killer with no opiuate direvitates in it for my husband who weaned himself off of his Norco due to a new truck driving job he has gotten. He retired from Dept. of Corrections in June and has dealt with adhesions from many, many previous surgeries, for almost 18 years. Some of the surgeries were to remove the adhesions. Needless to say NO MORE surgeries. He was on 40 mg c/r Oxycontin, 3 times a day, then transferred to a 75 mg Transdermal patch and a 10/325 Norco 3-4 times a day. The patch was changed every 4 days.
Of course the new job will not allow any opium based pain killers in his system. I was suggested this drug that we have never heard of before and would truly love some feed back about it from anyone who has taken it for pain relief..Neurontin..generic is Gabapentin. Thank you all for any replies. Our family health provider pretty well has given up on him, but it breaks my heart to still see him in pain.

After you read this, you might change your mind about taking neurontin/gabapintin. I was taking 600mg 4 x's a day until I read this study..This drug with has many side effects, basically kills your brain.

Re: Linda (# 8) Expand Referenced Message

Hi Linda. I read the study you mentioned about Neurontin. Basically, the concern is more for fetal development with pregnant women taking the drug. With adults, those neurons have already formed so it is not the same as with a developing brain, For it’s use in adults, I think the benefits of Neurontin outweigh any possible brain “damage”. At least that’s from my own experience. I’ve been taking gabapentin, two 800 mg tablets three times daily, for twenty years now to help control nerve pain due to a bad case of shingles. I still have a lot of shooting, stabbing pain in my leg and foot but I can’t imagine how bad it would be if I were not taking the gabapentin. If I had a choice, I wouldn’t take any medication. I hate that I have to, but I couldn’t function without it.

P. M.
