Gabapentin 100mg For 4 Years
(Newest replies first)
Updated
For four years, I've taken 100mg of Gabapentin (one capsule) along with 0.50mg of Ropinirole (two pills) at night only for Restless Leg Syndrome. I am 76 years old. There were times when I felt that I really could, maybe even should have increased, as directed but I just hate taking any kind of medicines and finally, it felt more ok enough to not increase. So, I did not. Now, I would like to get off of all of it but since the Gabapentin is one capsule, how I can taper off from that one? I can go down slowly on the Ropinirole by taking only one tablet each night as each one is .25mg but I do not know how I can cut the Gabapentin capsule with the powder medicine inside in half. Any suggestions or anyone else have a similar question?

Re: Verwon (# 1)
I'd like to stop taking the 100mg of Gabapentin because I have been hearing some horror stories of addiction from people on it and that they are needing to take more and more as the body becomes acclimated to it. I'd also like to get off of the Ropinirole for the same reasons. I have Restless Leg Syndrome and began taking Sinemet long ago until I maxed out on the prescribed amount to take. Then started on the Ropinirole. I am not remembering why my doctor prescribed the Gabapentin in addition to the Ropinirole rather than just going up on the dose of Ropinirole. I'd like to know if I can manage without any of these drugs. Last night I decided to try and get by without taking the Gabapentin. Took only the two 25mg's pills of Ropinirole. I am also kind of experiencing with different foods lately and what I have found is that if I skip dessert or any foods with corn syrup or sugar in it especially after dinner, I do not get the RL so severely. So, last night...50mg Ropinirole, nothing sugary and slept for 7 hours with no problem. This morning I noticed that I felt in my body a little shaky and felt a little anxious. Could it have been because I skipped the Gabapentin? By early afternoon, I felt perfectly fine. I am going to take the Gabapentin tonight plus the Ropinirole and stick with taking it this way, every other night for at least another week and see how I feel switching off of the Gabapentin (slowly) about every 3 nights, then every four nights, etc, until I can hopefully get completely off and then I will begin that same process with the Ropinirole. AND stay completely off of the sweets after lunch. :-) Not sure this will work but it's worth a try.
In many cases, doctor's will instruct the patient to start taking their doses further, and further apart, while gradually lowering the dosage. There are regular release tablets available that can be cut, or broken, so you could ask your doctor about prescribing the tablets, rather than capsules.
The FDA lists the typical withdrawal effects as possibly including nausea, fever, chills, rebound pain, dizziness, and weight changes.
Why do you want to go stop taking it?
