Folbic Prescription For Pai-1 And Mthfr C-factor
UpdatedI tested positive for PAI-1 and MTHFR C-factor, and I am pregnant. Why would they prescribe Folbic? Should I also be taking a blood thinner? Help, I am worried.

I have a history of blood clots and anuerysums and was diagnosed with MTHFR. I am on Folbic twice a day and Bayer Low Dose once a day. I hope your doctor has talked to you by now about starting a Bayer regimen.
You might want to ask your doctor about L-methylfolate. Women with the MTHFR polymorphism have a limited ability to break down synthetic folic acid (found in Folbic). This puts you at risk for folate deficiency related pregnancy complications. I work with NeevoDHA, a prenatal specifically indicated for women with the MTHFR mutation. NeevoDHA contains active L-methylfolate as an alternative to synthetic folic acid. L-methylfolate bypasses the MTHFR mutation. It's 7 times more bioavailable than folic acid and increases folate levels more effectively than folic acid. It is something simple and safe you can do to be certain folate deficiency is not an issue while trying to conceive and during pregnancy. Best of luck!
What Holly has posted about the MTHFR C-factor is correct, you do need to take a Folic Acid supplement, when diagnosed with it to help prevent birth defects.

As to the PAI-1 that usually causes excess bleeding, when injured, so it is doubtful that your doctor will prescribe a blood thinner.

Has your doctor provided any other instructions, or did they just prescribe the Folbic?
I have the same diagnosis and had multiple miscarriages prior to my successful pregnancy. My main suggestion is to get with a hematologist. I still see one. I am on folbic to keep my homocysteine levels down. It is working!! (And that is folic acid - medical research does not yet show that there is enough of an issue with processing folic acid, and seems to show higher than average supplementation is successful. Folbic also has b12 and b6.)
I have also read with the mutations we both have riboflavin (b2) can be an issue, too.
So I am on the Folbic, and in addition I take a daily multivitamin that has active folate, and also gives me vitamin D (mine is low) and riboflavin.
During pregnancy - and I had twins, and previous miscarriages, it’s important to note - but I was on high dose folate, and took low dose aspirin. I was changed over to blood thinner injections at one point, and did that for the remainder of my pregnancy.
So I’d see a hematologist and have them work with your OB in tandem. You may need supplementation beyond pregnancy, too! And they may have you try the aspirin therapy, it just depends.
I saw my hematologist ever 6 months for a while (post-babies), but now he has me down to once a year because my numbers look good.
Good luck to you!!! I know it feels scary, but I have two beautiful 12yr old boys now! So even with the mutations, you and your baby can come out of this just fine! ??
