Hi Jeanne,

As a psychotherapist and a holistic practitioner and the mother of two toddlers I wan to reply to your comment from a different angle. I am guessing that asking about Focolin Xr for your 6 year old has tod do with being told he/she has ADHD. If so, please be careful about giving such powerful drug to a child. The medical community still does not know the long term effects of many of these drugs on the brains of children. In fact, the whole diagnosis of ADHD and ADD is questionable. There could be many other factors attributing to your child's symptoms and I would want to encourage you to look into those other areas and see if you can help your child with out turning to drugs right away. I am a strong advocate of keeping our kids drug free. Some of the areas you may to look into with your child are nutrition (there is speculation that some kids are allergic to sugar and food additives), see a nutritionist and see if changing his/her diet can help. Also, sometimes a child's misbehavior is symptomatic of the home environment. Is your child living a safe, loving and harmonious environment or is there a lot of chaos and conflict surrounding him/her. Another area is finding out how your child learns best. It could be that your child is super smart and has a difficult time sitting in school and learning the traditional way. Perhaps learning about different learning styles can help your child do better in school.

My son is 6 and was put on 5mg capsules extended release Focalin XR. The teacher said he is not jumping around or playing while doing class work but it takes to long for him to do his work. "ADD" Yes he is behind in reading but there is 22 kids in the class with 1 teacher. Classes are to big and kids dont get the help they need and I feel teachers like getting the kids on the pills just to keep them setting. I cant send my kids to a school where they will get in smaller classes more teachers to help.

PLEASE if any one knows of a way to help my son without the pills let me know. My nephew as been on pills every since he was little and he has just gotting worse!!!!

I'm not giving a pill to my son yet and pray to GOD there is a answer out there without giving pills. Please he is 6 yr and 49 lb and the bad thing about this is weight lost and the blood presser. Thank you Barbara
