I have been taking finasteride for about two years now, and it seems to me that I have developed increased abdominal flab. Thankfully, no breast development (yet!), but I definitely feel an increase in size around my waist and below. The literature available suggests that weight gain is not a side effect [1]; however, it appears to me that it might be, as I have gained about 7 to 8 pounds. I would be interested in hearing about others' experiences in this regard. Thank you.

I got the same s***..front of lower abs just kept get puffy and swollen in appearance..Started 1 month after taking the drug..Also feel unmotivated most of the time..plus lose a s*** load of hair while taking this crap.

I am 43 and have been a professional
Athlete for most of my adult lift. I have this ridiculous tire around my waist since I started finasteride in October. I have never had a fat waist in my life. I don't want to lose my hair but I need to figure something out because this sucks

I am approaching 2 years OFF of Fin and though cardio and light-moderate weight lifting has helped me keep weight off, the more feminine distribution of fat has remained (moobs, thighs, butt, pelvic area). Seems a high price to pay especially since I no longer have the positive benefits.

i also started taking finastride 9 months ago .now i gained 23 pounds around my waist.any ideas how

It seems to me that there is a lot of silence around the side effects of Finasteride. There is so much anecdotal evidence for weight gain which is hard to reverse. I am 90, and was prescribed Finasteride 5mg daily to manage
my enlarged prostate. As a biologist, I knew that the result would be due to changes towards a more feminine
hormone balance. A year later, my prostate has indeed shrunk, and I can pee normally (hooray!). But I now have
quite definite breasts, with enlarged and sensitive nipples. Also, the fat distribution on my body has taken on a
definite female pattern. My lower abdomen is swathed in fat, inner thighs ditto, and a large arse. Anyone similar?

I am 90 and have been on Finasteride for a year, for prostate enlargement. I have grown breasts, and I have gained abdominal fat way beyond my normal shape. It feels like my shape is more feminine. Efforts to lose extra weight are useless, it just stays there. I have lost my libido and my genitals have shrunk. BUT, I can pee freely!

Hi,
I am a woman on finasteride for hair loss and it helps A LOT. I found I had lots of weight gain and aching muscles especially in my left upper arm. I started taking the medication at night thinking I could sleep through the side effects somewhat. What I found is that the weight gain also stopped. Just a thought.

WOW... I have been on Finasteride for almost a year. I gained about 25 lbs, and despite a strict diet and working out 5 days a week for almost 2 hours a day for almost 2 month, I can't get rid of any of the weight I gained. I am going to stop taking the medication for a few weeks and see what happens. For those of you who have stop taking Finasteride, what did you doctor recommend as an alternative?

I feel the same way as you. I just wish I new for sure what was going on. If I knew I could get lean by dropping finasteride, then I would gladly start wearing a glue-on wig to deal with the hair loss.

I was taking 1 mg every other day (a 5 mg of Proscar cut into quarters). Now I'm up to half of that tablet daily because it looks like its not too effective anymore - still thinning. I take mine in the morning on an empty stomach.

I take Proscar (Canadian version of Propecia). For more than ten years I have been trying to get really fit but I can never bulk up my shoulders and I always have a muffin top. Looking at me you'd say I'm thin, maybe fit, but if you just saw my waist without clothes and nothing else you would think I'd never set foot in a gym. I also tried calorie deficiting and went from 180 lbs to 151 in about 5 months or so. I'm a 33yo 5'9" male. And the outcome of that was I looked to skinny - but still had flab around the waist - love handles, belly - just smaller. I've tried low carb, I've tried interval sprinting, I've tried lifting to failure once a week. I maintain a healthy weight, but not the physique appropriate for the beach - never!

Thought it was just me! 6 months, 15 lbs! I shudder to think what my weight would be without reducing my caloric intake.

33 year old male, been on finasteride for 3 months. Have gained 2kg on weight.
I had been bulking at the gym prior for about a year, and made about 10kg in mass.
However I got stuck at 80kg and found it impossible to put more weight on until I started finasteride that is.

I have also started valdoxan for the last 1.5 months, could be the combination of antidepressant and finasteride??

How do people take their finasteride? I take mine before bed after a big dinner, maybe it's better in the morning?

Good luck. I, male 53, had changes in the same areas that you mentioned. Had been on fin for about 6 months when I saw a picture of myself that shocked me to no end! Well I've been off for about 6 months and it's gotten better, but not by much. Hopefully continuously working out will finally work for me. Best wishes for you.

Female, 34 been on for almost 3 weeks and feel midsection and thigh weight gain..... Had breast tenderness too. Does this slow your metabolism? ughh

In September I started Finasteride. My doctor said that it does not cause weight gain, but I have gained 5 pounds and it just keeps going up. I work out daily, but the scale won't budge. I've never had a weight problem. Now sadly I have to decide whether I want to be bald or fat!

Hi guys,
I just experienced all the things mentioned above......water retention, abdominal fat, increased appetite.......since reading this I am stopping fin to see if this makes a difference to my weight......I have been on Fin for over 12 months I had a break for a month or so and then started back on it and again noticed the belly fat return. Like others I have trained more, done more cardio, watched my diet - to no avale. I had a sneaking suspicion it was the fin - I am almost now positive it has everything to do with Fin. As one gentlemen has mentioned above "I'd rather be bald and fit then chubby with good hair!"

I have always been skinny and could never gain any weight no matter how much I ate. I've been on Finasteride for about 2 years and I've noticed fat build up in my abdomen. While I still have decent metabolism, there has been a noticeable change.

All aboard! I am 38 have always been fit, to the point where last year I completed an Ironman Triathlon. since then I have been taking 2.5mg of finasteride per day. I have gained 15lbs in a year. I would rather bed bald and fit than FAT and hairy. I am done
