Finasteride Weight Gain (Page 6)

Updated

I have been taking finasteride for about two years now, and it seems to me that I have developed increased abdominal flab. Thankfully, no breast development (yet!), but I definitely feel an increase in size around my waist and below. The literature available suggests that weight gain is not a side effect [1]; however, it appears to me that it might be, as I have gained about 7 to 8 pounds. I would be interested in hearing about others' experiences in this regard. Thank you.

I started taking Finasteride about 2 years ago and noticed many of the symptoms described in this thread, especially the weight gain and loss of libido. I've been active all my life and have maintained my fitness and weight all of these years. I finally stopped taking Finasteride about 5 months ago and started working with a personal trainer about 4 months ago. The entire first hour was about diet. NOT dieting, but eating sensibly. The weight gain started to slowly reverse, but then I had an injury and had to stop ALL workouts for about a month. I discovered that the key for me was to 1) Limit my total sugar intake, 2) Significantly limit alcohol consumption (I don't drink much anyway), and 3) Eat sensible portions. It really isn't dieting in the usual sense in that it really required very little change and certainly no hunger pains. I continued to lose weight EVEN WITHOUT the exercise. Please bear in mind that I was about 190 lbs. about all of my adult life (I'm now 74). I shot up to almost 210 on Finasteride. I'm now at 193 lbs. and my target weight of 185 is in sight and attainable. Your situations are very likely different, but the key for me was how and what I was eating.

Same here.. Noticed a considerable weight gain around the abdominal area after about 6 months into .1 mg fin per day.

So have been off Propecia for 5 months now. The weight gain has stopped and now my body is heading back into a normal state - losing weight and everything seems normal.
I won't be using Propecia again, rather be bald than have my weight go out of control.

Wrong. Still here and going well. Slight weight change which is manageable.

Update** Continuing to decline folks..Worsening conditions including even less energy..Tried to run this morning, made it 2 miles instead of my usual 3.1.. Used to be 5.25. I ran 4 to 5 times a week..Weight now up 40lbs! Around 198lbs..I hate to say this but feel I could be in the last stage of my life...My physical condition and well being has declined at a rate and now to point that I would have never believed or accepted in my life before..It's un-real and I believe now this condition is a life threatening condition for some people with these drastic physical and mental side effects..Seems nothing can be done to even improve the condition for us let alone reverse it..So I would think you would eventually not be able to function or death would result even if you didn't commit suicide as it just continues to worsen. I am afraid to try anything else or drugs as some have said you get even worse..About out of hope..

Finasteride is the only reason I have gained over 10lbs in 6weeks. I am a super fit 33 year old man who has been the same weight for over 8 years.. Yet within 6 weeks of taking this drug I am ashamed of my body. Not much point having a fine head of hair if you have a big fat podgy belly. I also had regular headaches too. Enough is enough, it's time to accept a balding head in the interests of staying fit and healthy.

Hopfully u stopped in time and the condition will reverse..You should see the weight come off and massive hair shed in 3 to 4 months..Mine did the first time on gerneic proscar..However if in a few months if your weight continues to worsen and hair stays you have got pfs..

I've been taking 5 mg of Finasteride for about two months for an enlarged prostate which it has helped, but have definitely started gaining weight without any other life style changes.

Another month and only worsening...No better...Most symptoms appear to be from an estrogen dominance condition..I have still heard of people going on for years like this in this state with no improvement..Some have tried a clomid and Letrozole combination with some success.. At this point I wished I could find anything that just help "some" with these symptoms..This is a nightmare to watch what happens to your body and hair..My hair is what some have dubbed "old lady hair" or what I have called "straw hair" or "cartoon hair"..Complete change in body, hair, mind, no energy, etc..

Hello All
wondering if folks who discontinued finasteride due to weight gain, were able to shake-off the gained weight? plus, how long before you started to notice the weight loss after discontinuing finasteride?

I took it for appx 4 months and gained 7-8 lbs. I did lose most of the weight after a few months but did not lose the spare tire around my waist bit appears as if the finasteride changed my body shape permanently. Weight came off everywhere else except for belly and lower back fat which I never had before taking the drug. I've been off of the drug for over a year.
That's my story. Perhaps someone else has had better luck.

I am so mad. I couldn't figure out why I gained 6 pounds in the last three months and the only thing that I could attribute it to is this medicine

I have been on Finasteride for about a month now. Have started a steady weight gain with no change in diet or activity. I have noticed about 2 Lbs gain per week. I am too big to start with and this does not help. I am 75 so I will stop this and let the prostate do what it wants.

I experienced a weight gain and have been working hard to get rid of excess pounds. I'm finding it's taking a combination of very conscientious eating (i.e., no sugar and smaller portions) and exercise to lose the weight. The eating is my primary culprit. I had been taking Finasteride for about 2 years and stopped about 8 months ago. The first 10 pounds came off relatively quickly but these last 10 are proving to be very difficult. Prior to starting F my weight was very steady for years but went up after starting it.

I have made dramatic improvements since seeing a Neuro hormone specialist and got on the Clomid and supplements..My mind has improved to almost pre Finasteride state..the physical sides are the same crazy weight gain and fluid is still there but changing..I may start TRT protocol hcg next hoping it will help further..This condition was closed thing to death I have experienced..i was told it is entirely neurological ie chemical brain trauma and Neuro steroids that cause all these crazy symptoms.

Well I have been taking Finasteride since 2/1/2017 and I have gained weight and growing out of my work uniform. So I decided to look up and see if this drug has caused weight gain and as everyone who has been taking this drug has gained weight by taking this drug so I'm stopping now today for 4/14/2017. Also on 2/15/2017 I have had a hair transplant and I am using the Igrow helmet that has cold red laser lights that has also been very beneficial. Anyhow I wish everybody success in getting their hair loss under control.

I just asked my doctor the same thing. They said adjust my diet but didn't actually admit that the finasterid had that effect.
I did some of my own research and it metabolizes testoserone. So There is the belly fat. And the weight is hard to lose because the testoserone is gone. Thats kind of the male engine.
So yes it does, in my 67 year old opinion!
