Finasteride Weight Gain (Page 4) (Top voted first)

I have been taking finasteride for about two years now, and it seems to me that I have developed increased abdominal flab. Thankfully, no breast development (yet!), but I definitely feel an increase in size around my waist and below. The literature available suggests that weight gain is not a side effect [1]; however, it appears to me that it might be, as I have gained about 7 to 8 pounds. I would be interested in hearing about others' experiences in this regard. Thank you.

I was taking 1 mg every other day (a 5 mg of Proscar cut into quarters). Now I'm up to half of that tablet daily because it looks like its not too effective anymore - still thinning. I take mine in the morning on an empty stomach.

I feel the same way as you. I just wish I new for sure what was going on. If I knew I could get lean by dropping finasteride, then I would gladly start wearing a glue-on wig to deal with the hair loss.

WOW... I have been on Finasteride for almost a year. I gained about 25 lbs, and despite a strict diet and working out 5 days a week for almost 2 hours a day for almost 2 month, I can't get rid of any of the weight I gained. I am going to stop taking the medication for a few weeks and see what happens. For those of you who have stop taking Finasteride, what did you doctor recommend as an alternative?

Hi,
I am a woman on finasteride for hair loss and it helps A LOT. I found I had lots of weight gain and aching muscles especially in my left upper arm. I started taking the medication at night thinking I could sleep through the side effects somewhat. What I found is that the weight gain also stopped. Just a thought.

It seems to me that there is a lot of silence around the side effects of Finasteride. There is so much anecdotal evidence for weight gain which is hard to reverse. I am 90, and was prescribed Finasteride 5mg daily to manage
my enlarged prostate. As a biologist, I knew that the result would be due to changes towards a more feminine
hormone balance. A year later, my prostate has indeed shrunk, and I can pee normally (hooray!). But I now have
quite definite breasts, with enlarged and sensitive nipples. Also, the fat distribution on my body has taken on a
definite female pattern. My lower abdomen is swathed in fat, inner thighs ditto, and a large arse. Anyone similar?

i also started taking finastride 9 months ago .now i gained 23 pounds around my waist.any ideas how
to lose besides not eating.

I am 43 and have been a professional
Athlete for most of my adult lift. I have this ridiculous tire around my waist since I started finasteride in October. I have never had a fat waist in my life. I don't want to lose my hair but I need to figure something out because this sucks

I got the same s***..front of lower abs just kept get puffy and swollen in appearance..Started 1 month after taking the drug..Also feel unmotivated most of the time..plus lose a s*** load of hair while taking this crap.

This is very concerning. The fact that ure an athlete and never had belly fat leaves most of us with no hope. I gym 3-4 times a week and also noticed whatever I accomplish at gym seems to get me no where since I'm on finpecia for the last 4-6 months. I'm not very tall but stocky with broad shoulders n chest. My hard work bench pressing is disappearing quickly and I can foresee easily turning to man boobs! So to have hair it seems it requires me to be more a female figure. Even cut sugar n carbs totally, maintained protein diet with veggies but still. This is a horrible position to be in.

Has anyone managed to find a way around this. Please share.

I started using Propecia January 2015 and I have gained ten pounds. It is the Propecia because I am very active and eat healthy meals everyday.

Started hair fall treatment in September - both minox and finesteride 5mg once a week; gained 7 kg in a month. Suspecting both of it now. Stopped both in October and lost about 2 kgs now in Nov. I have been 82 kg last 3-4 years and nothing else changed. As others stated, better bald and fit rather than fat and hairy.

I completely agree that this drug causes serious weight gain. Some have implied it was not characterized by increased eating for them but for me the appetite went through the roof, which no doubt caused most of the 25 lbs. gain I experienced.

Mine is slowly getting worse..I am gonna see an endocrinologist soon if it doesn't begin reverseing..I have been told this is due to a great increase in estrogen from the drug...Estrogen will increase appetite as well but even if you don't eat you stay 8 to 10lbs above your normal weight range..It is manily fluid or water retention which you can tell just by the look and feel of it..Skin appearance also changes and is puffy and more wrinkled...Terrible drug..I can't believe this has not been taken off the market yet..

Has weight come off since stopping finasteride? The same weight gain is happening to me after taking for 4 months and I'm stopping the stuff. Please advise!

Read below holyhead... there was someone who gradually lost by exercising and eating properly. Don't give up hope. And if you're a man shave your head for god's sake. Or go crew cut. Men can still look good with little to no hair!
