Finasteride Weight Gain (Page 2)

I have been taking finasteride for about two years now, and it seems to me that I have developed increased abdominal flab. Thankfully, no breast development (yet!), but I definitely feel an increase in size around my waist and below. The literature available suggests that weight gain is not a side effect [1]; however, it appears to me that it might be, as I have gained about 7 to 8 pounds. I would be interested in hearing about others' experiences in this regard. Thank you.
I started taking finasteride 1 year ago from today and have gained weight as well even though I am an active 28 year who exercises regularly. It is frustrating to say the least, however, I would much rather keep my hair than lose all of it
Re: Emily (# 131)
Ok Emily, if you say so ;) Good luck on your 1000 calorie a day diet
Re: Mary (# 123)
I now have thicker hair. Cut the finasteride to 3x a week. Lost three pounds. There's a lesson here. BALANCE.
Re: Mayn (# 125)
That's BS since I monitor every bite, am living on about 1000 calories, do the gym and hour 4-5 times a week and STILL have the problem. These are the things one must consider with meds - you can gain weight on otherwise totally healthy life activities. To say smugly that's not it is not helpful.
Re: Mayn (# 126)
It's used to stop hair thinning and is approved for that in women. It works. But those new 10 pounds peeve me no end.
Re: Mary (# 127)
Thanks - can't call it "harm" but it IS a recognized side effect I found in SOME people. I appear to be on. It isn't the WORST thing that can happen, but it's not fun either.
Re: Mary (# 127)
that is a fair point, women of certain ages can......but i'd be careful about assuming your dermatologist is well informed enough to prescribe it, the cold hard truth is that nobody TRULY knows the extent of the possible side effects and what it CAN do to the human body. good luck to you
I think my dermatologist would know who she can legally prescribe too. If you read up on it- women past child bearing years will not be harmed by finasteride.
Weight gain is a very very simple concept. If you have gained weight you are eating above your BMR on a consistent basis. If you gain 5 lbs then lower your calorie intake and monitor it. Finasteride is not fully understood so yes an impact is very possible, but this does not change the principles of weight loss and weight gain. Every person has a tendency to store fat in certain places, it is part of your genetic make up. Stomach area, love handles, upper leg are common places. Age will also affect your metabolism, a 35 year old mans BMR will decrease by the time he is 45, meaning his calorie intake must decrease also if he wishes to maintain the same weight. 'It must be the finasteride' is a very overused statement........
Back after months of treatment from mark Gordon some improvements on testosterone cypionate along with Clomid now..Weight up 60lbs now from 160 to 220lbs..seems permanent..
Same with me sister! Would rather have thin hair than a thick waist! Made the same decision myself after gaining 8-9 pounds.
Yes - I am a woman using it for thinning hair (that is working) but have gained about 10 pounds abdominally and around my waist. I think I'll take thin hair.
I am 43. I started taking Finasteride 4 months ago. At the same time I started cardio, yoga and cutting down on calories. In the beginning, I lost just about 4 pounds (198 to 194) in about 2 month. I continued my low calorie diet, yoga and 30 minute cardio and expected my weight to get lower. Nothing happened. Now I am 196lbs since last month.
I will stop Finasteride and Minoxidil and see if I can continue to lose weight.
I just asked my doctor the same thing. They said adjust my diet but didn't actually admit that the finasterid had that effect.
I did some of my own research and it metabolizes testoserone. So There is the belly fat. And the weight is hard to lose because the testoserone is gone. Thats kind of the male engine.
So yes it does, in my 67 year old opinion!
Well I have been taking Finasteride since 2/1/2017 and I have gained weight and growing out of my work uniform. So I decided to look up and see if this drug has caused weight gain and as everyone who has been taking this drug has gained weight by taking this drug so I'm stopping now today for 4/14/2017. Also on 2/15/2017 I have had a hair transplant and I am using the Igrow helmet that has cold red laser lights that has also been very beneficial. Anyhow I wish everybody success in getting their hair loss under control.
I have made dramatic improvements since seeing a Neuro hormone specialist and got on the Clomid and supplements..My mind has improved to almost pre Finasteride state..the physical sides are the same crazy weight gain and fluid is still there but changing..I may start TRT protocol hcg next hoping it will help further..This condition was closed thing to death I have experienced..i was told it is entirely neurological ie chemical brain trauma and Neuro steroids that cause all these crazy symptoms.
I experienced a weight gain and have been working hard to get rid of excess pounds. I'm finding it's taking a combination of very conscientious eating (i.e., no sugar and smaller portions) and exercise to lose the weight. The eating is my primary culprit. I had been taking Finasteride for about 2 years and stopped about 8 months ago. The first 10 pounds came off relatively quickly but these last 10 are proving to be very difficult. Prior to starting F my weight was very steady for years but went up after starting it.
I have been on Finasteride for about a month now. Have started a steady weight gain with no change in diet or activity. I have noticed about 2 Lbs gain per week. I am too big to start with and this does not help. I am 75 so I will stop this and let the prostate do what it wants.
I, too gained several pounds. At least ten pounds.
