I have the fexofenadine hydrochloride tablets in 180 mg dosage. Question: they seem too strong for me--can i split them in half?

Re: sylvia (# 2)
I know this is an old topic, but I figure I'd put in my two cents for anyone seeing this who might be interested.
I talked to a pharmacist who said that 180 mg tablets were safe to split as they weren't time release nor enteric coated. I took the full 180 mg dose and I would had the shakes for about half a day. After splitting I have no issues although it's not an approved dose. I'm not specifically recommending anyone try it, but anyone can ask a doctor or pharmacist what they might recommend.
I used to take the normal prescription dose of name-brand Allegra in capsules, and that was 60 mg that was supposed to be effective for up to 12 hours. There are nonprescription name brand Allegra and generic fexofenadine 60 mg available, but they're harder to find and generally more expensive than the commonly available 180 mg versions. But all I can say is that the splitting has worked OK for me.
thanks for the info. thought this was what i could do. just too much for me in 180 mg dose. thanks again
Is there a score line (indent) on the pill? If there is, then it is there specifically for the purpose of cutting the pill in half. Whether or not there is a score line, I would still cut the pill in half if it is needed. Maybe talk to your doctor about getting a lower dose of this medication if you consistently feel the need to use half a dose.
NOTE: cutting a pill in half only works if the pill is in tablet form. This just wouldn't work if it is a capsule, since the contents would fall out.
Hope this helps!
