Fentanyl Patches Turning Pink Within Hours And Falling Off
(Newest replies first)

My father has recently started on these patches after a second full knee replacement and being on other pain killers for nearly 3 years now. The first 2 weeks they worked fine, lasting the 3 days gradualy turning from blue to pink then leaving a sticky residue that was quite hard to get off afterwards...the last few times, they are turning pink straightaway (within 3 hours) and falling off within 24...I'm really scared they aren't slow-release and it will cause damage in some way. Sorry my post is not so detailed as I need things explaining simply.
I'm just so worried about him as he's very poorly at the moment and depressed too.

Fentanyl use in a depressed person is a very bad idea. Is his skin perfectly clean and undamaged? Is he taking any other chemicals? (meds, alcohol, or using skin care products?) is he sweating a lot? The only patch that should be used is by Mylan because other brand's plastic is too stiff and won't conform to bending skin. There is no problem cutting them in half and applying them more frequently. Take the initiative to learn what patches have been poorly made or quality controlled, there are a LOT of them. It's entirely possible to go out of ones' way to make a patch that will deliver too rapidly. Patient should also have a suboxone pen available at all times, and ideally be living with someone who can monitor them.
This is what I do and have no problem keeping them on . If there is hair where you are putting them on , cut the hair close with scissors only . Then wash really good and dry with a clean towel . After that I clean with a achahol pad then when dry apply it and hold pressure on it for 30 seconds . I have never had one come off when doing it this way
I am a Chronic Pain patient. My doctor retired and he had me on 3 oxycotin 60's and two oxycodone 15's a day!!! I didn't know what an opiate was when I first started this. (15 years ago) All I knew was I was no longer in pain! My "new" doctor put me on the Fentanyl 25mg. patch every three days. The patches DO work but won't stay on! So I have been using tape to keep them in place but I'm 65 years old and my skin is thin. Taking them off is agonizing. I'll be on SOMETHING for the rest of my life and I don't care if I am "doctor addicted". I just want to be out of pain and have a somewhat normal? life. You can get addicted to anything including gum. But I use my meds. AS directed and would never abuse them.
The "pink" is an allergic reaction to that brand. TELL / SHOW your pharmacist and doctor. Get an emergency visit to your doctor to show him this!
It probably is an allergy to the glue, not the fentanyl.
A different brand may work just fine. I am allergic to the Mylan brand in the same way. I can use the sandoz or the watson brand without a problem.
Have you talked to his doctor, or pharmacist about it?
I do know that some patches put out were found to be defective, but I am not sure if there are any that are still available from pharmacies.
Otherwise, you might have just gotten ones made by a different manufacturer and may need to use medical tape, or something, to help hold them on for 3 days.

I'd really suggest asking his pharmacist, as they can probably help with more information.
