Have you consulted a doctor? Where they prescribed to be used together?

Since these are both controlled release medications, they are rarely used together, in this manner, due to the risks it can cause, since they both cause depression of the central nervous system. This is usually only done in cases of very severe, chronic pain, where the person has already built up a tolerance to the narcotics and is no longer getting effective relief from them.

Normally, if someone is using the Fentanyl patch and requires a medication for breakthrough pain, they are given a regular release or instant release medication.

Did a doctor prescribe these? If so, did one doctor prescribe the morphine and one the fentanyl? Odd combination, as they arent typically taken together. We're you given fentanyl for maintenance and morphine for breakthrough pain?
If a doctor is not aware of your having both these medications I urge you to NEVER mix narcotics or any drugs not evaluated and prescribed together by the same doctor or by two physicians both aware of the combination. If you're taking them for a "high", you would be taking a big gamble with your health and your life in generally. Mixing the two could cause respiratory failure.

@ Jacq: I'm so sorry to hear that your husband has been enduring such a tough and painful disease, and my prayers are with you both. As for the morphine, it is sometimes prescribed to suppress the cough reflex, so it does have implications in that arena. I'm not sure how it actually affects the mucus itself, but it can definitely control cough. God bless!

In answer to the feeling weird with the fentanyl. No, I never have and have been on it for 10 years. I did experience nausea and vomiting on initial prescription and with every increase from 25 to 50 and from 50 to 75. It was prescribed because many pain meds messed with my head too much and my neurologist prescribed it after my head injury. I have just been switched to morphine sulfate er with my fentanyl.patch. The doctor decreased my patch to 50mcg/hr every three days. I was on 75 fentanyl.and oxymorphone but my insurance would not up my dosage on the opana/oxymorphone. Kinda scared about the switch since I had been on the one combo for five years now. Just hoping I have less pain days. I am also concerned
because I went from oxymorphone IR to the morphine sulfate ER .

Hi. I wonder if anyone can help me with a question.
I am taking amoixycylin for my chest infection.
The green mucus was coming up and I stated to feel a bit better,however since I started taking more of the morphine sulfate.well.the mucus has stoped coming up.
Does morphine sulfate suppress mucus ? Thanks in advance for any answers.

Fentanyl caused me to throw up thick, white slimy mucus. When I check out why, they said it was medication poisoning! Pulled the patch, took 24 hours to stop throwing up! Hung over for a while too.

It is probably the fentanyl that caused the mucus in your throat. This happened to both my mom and years earlier to me. They backed down the amount given to my mom and the phlegm was a lot less. It didn't go away till she was off it totally!

ive been taking 3omg morphine er then got swiched over to 50mcg fentanyl....on the third day i was experiencing the worst vomiting attacks ever....so i ripped the patch off and waited about 12 hours and took my 30mg morphine is that will i be okay

I have lung disease & I do notice that when I take my morphine sulphate it makes my breathing worse & makes mucus harder to come up,this can cause me to get chest infections.
My Doctor also told me that morphine does in fact make breathing worse.
I now only take morphine if I'm in agony with pain.

ALL pain management doctors are bona fide anaesthesiologists.. they are experts on pain pharmacology. As long as your pm physician has prescribed the medication and you are under their constant care you are fine. Always call your dr with ANY concerns or side effects. Do not EVER take these meds for recreational use and if you dont value your life enough to be wary of these meds you probably need a phycologist, not a pain medical physician. Hope everyone who suffers with pain on a daily basis finds a good doctor who sympathizes with your condition.

I am using a 75 fentanyl patch and 30 mlg. Ir morphine. It helps alot with my pain. But i do get dizzy sometimes. My pain is from my liver due to cancer.

You say you know a lot about meds. Please can you tell me if zomorph 10mg twice per day & 6x dyhidrocodein should be taken together as I have to ween myself off the dycodeine? What are the side effects & why do I have to ween myself off the codeine? I also take gabapentin (9 per day). What is the best way to ween myself? Thank You.

My Doctor took me off from the fentanyl patches last month n put me on Opanas 40 .n today I went n they told me they took them off d market so I went back to my Doctor n subscribe me the 30 mg morphine but I still have a couple of patches left from b4 .that's why I was wondering if it's okay to used them both due to my back pain CX I have 6 screws n I feel them
