False Positive Methamphetamine On A Child's Hair Drug Test (Top voted first)
UpdatedMy son with autism had been given a hair follicle drug test and has tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine. However my other son who shares the same living quarters etc with his brother test results were negative. I have full custody and know they have not been exposed to either of those substances. Are there any medicines that could cause this false positive showing up in my oldest son? He has autism and takes Abilify and Celexa, also cold and allergy medicines as needed. Could this possibly be the cause of a false positive?

Usually when people post a question like this or call me for advice I tell them to get a consult with an Medical Review Officer (MRO). An MRO is a doctor trained to look at the complete picture and say why there was a false positive etc... They have an association web site (aamro.com) where you can look up an MRO in your area. Look for something that says "Find an MRO". I have no affiliation with the web site. In regards to hair drug testing, I have been involved with it for about 15 years and one of the main features/advantages of hair drug testing is the ability to isolate a particular substance thereby having a very low false positive rate. Hope this helps.
Unless it's something simple to "suss put" as one of my new Southern Residents says, I do the same thing. These guys can do more and more quickly even than I, a Exec Chief of Psychiatry. God advice, bro!
There are several possibilities, I agree with the record to see an MRO or a Toxicologist. Unfortunately, these tests are very expensive unless the referring doc can find a reasonable diagnosis to "Rule Out" - R/O. This gets into a sticky area. I can't give you some time-tested tricks. That would be illegal. I hope you have a family doc. Have him access all the test rules available and take it from there. I know that lot of kids decongestants/antihistamine-DC combos have PEUDOEPHEDRINE and, given the properly circumstances, your son's normal allergy pill could cause a POS for methamphetamine and amphetamines. You definitely need a highly-trained specialist. The Social Work Dept of a major hospital near you might help. Sorry I couldn't REALLY answer your questions.
