False Negative Test For Methadone (Page 2)

Updated

I am taking 80mg of Methadone daily for pain control. For the past two months it is not showing up in my urine or blood when it always had in the past. I am frightened because now I question what the pharmacy has been giving me. I have felt less relief of my pain over the past two months, but I would have gone into withdrawal if the medicine was not Methadone. help, I need answers. If it isn't showing up it looks as if I am not taking it, which I am. I truly cannot without pain control. Thanks, hoping for some insight.

Joanne, you are in danger of being thrown out of a methadone program if it is not showing up in your urine, and it should be. I suggest that you buy a home test kit (I have seen them at drug stores) and test it yourself. If could be a problem with the lab, and nothing to do with you. If you show positive as you should on the home kit, buy another to take with you to the clinic and tell them you think it must be the lab, show them the test kit, and offer to give them a sample right there to prove that you are not diverting it (which is what they will believe, and rightly so.)

No Deb, you don't hire a lawyer. To future doctors, it will make you look like trouble, and they don't need patients like that. It is hard enough trying to do the right thing for your patients when you have the DEA and licensing board forever monitoring you when they don't know your patients or what they need like you do. "Cover your own ass" sure! How else do you continue to treat patients and write the scripts that you all need!! I have spent the morning reading this board, and it comes down mainly to the fact that government as its grip around the throats of the doctors, and the very best way to get things right is for pain patients to get political. The state legislature controls the licensing boards and make them back off the doctors. If this would happen, then you would go to your doctor for pain control as easily as you would for a sore throat. The management is not complicated, and I am sure the doctor would be happy to help you in every way possible. He is required to do all these drug screens and to act accordingly. All this could be changed with a state law that only allows the licensing boards to license doctors after checking their qualifications to practice and beyond that leaving the practice of medicine to the doctor. One more thing that pain patients don't see. For every one of you, there are 5 other people who come to the office who are fakes, liars, and dealers, and NO, doctors do not have superhuman powers to discover who the fakers are. You just have to use the tools that you have, as crude as they are, and do your best. Many of them do have demonstrable problems! Cancer patients who find it profitable to get more pain medicine than they really need. Amputees who claim excruciating phantom limb pain who are doctor hopping and are discovered to be using the doctors sympathy to trick him into giving them more medicine. Many pain patients and drug addicts who are trying to do right confront the suspicious and apparently unsympathetic doctor, but I tell you that after you have been tricked and lied to so many times, visited by state investigators, etc, you get really suspicious of everyone who wants pain meds. and would prefer not to give them at all. If you want to blame someone for your bad situation, blame your fellow human beings that they to crook the system, and the government monitors who are just as suspicious of the doctors as the doctors are the patients.

Thank you for your input. The problem was resolved. It turned out that it was the test. They had to do the correct teast and it shows up. I am not on methadone due to a drug problem. This is used for the unrelenting pain I experience from RSD. Thank you again and enjoy your Sunday!

Hi Doc,
You are so right about all that you have written. I was a nurse for 25 years prior to becoming disabled from RSD. I had compatment to my left foot after an injury. I had three facsiotimies as well as six ambulatory surgical procedures. This left me in a wheelchair and with crutches until my pain was managed. I was reluctant to turn to medication and consequently lived with unrelenting excruciting pain. The pain management allows me to walk and I am so grateful for that. I am unable to do many things I used to enjoy, but still I am grateful that the doctors saved my foot. The surgeries required the skills of a vascular, neuro and othopedic surgeons. That being said, I totally agree with you about the people who have made it difficult for those of us who really have pain. All you have to do is read the paper or watch the news. I believe that we do have to be political to protect the rights of the physicians as well as the patients. The government has no business telling doctors what to do. They cannot even run the government let alone play doctor! I have a doctor who know me very well. I am able to share everything with him in an effort to get the best care possible. I have ONE doctor and if I even see a dentist I make him aware of it and if I am prescribed any medication I tell him. I have a neighbor who goes to the same doctor and receives two controlled medications each month. Then she sees a neurologist each month and gets other controlled meds. She uses two different pharmacies. Not only does she take these medications which I do not believe she needs, she also sells them. If you were in this situation would you tell the physician? I have a great deal of respect for him and it angers me that she lies to him. But I am fearful to tell him because I am afraid of her. On that note I will close and thank you for addressing this. It is something we all need to address.

Hi Dawn,
I saw the doctor and did start Lyrica for break-through pain two week ago. The problem is, I don't like the side effects. I may have to stop taking it because along with side effects I am not seeing any relief from the pain. I am scared because nothing will take this pain away completely. I just pray that with research they will find something to make it bearable. I was told by the doctor I have a high threshold for pain, but I do not see it with this disease. Thanks Dawn for your suggestion!

Joanne, the Lyrica is not a traditional analgesic, so it doesn't relieve pain immediately the way analgesics do and I've actually never heard of it being given for breakthrough pain before.

Lyrica contains the active ingredient Pregabalin, which is an anticonvulsant that can also help with certain types of nerve pain, however, it does have to be taken for about 4 to 6 weeks, before it will reach its full effect in your body.

What types of side effects are you experiencing from it?

I AGREE COMPLETELY. WHAT CAN WE DO TO GET THE DEA OUT OF MY MD'S AND PHARMACISTS BUSINESS?

I can understand, in view of long-forgotten abuses in the field, that there should be some agency overlooking quality assurance, but there are MULTIPLE agencies at MULTIPLE levels doing far too much minding of other people's business. Any ideas will be appreciated. Maybe we can get some energy directed this way.

At the risk of repeating, Methadone is a synthetic (man made) opioid and requires a special test. So long as the proper test is performed it is seldom missed as it remains in your system above the level of detection for a prolonged period of time.

Failure to detect, false negative, is usually a lab error or failure of the physician to order proper test. It does not register on standard opiate panels.

Did you know that it is illegal to drug test you without your permission!!! you can go after the doctor for that. Unless you signed a consent when you first started going to the clinic stating that they can drug test you at any time without your knowledge.

Well Doc, if you read my letter then why after 16 years would this doctor do this without retesting me or giving me the benefit of the doubt! Do you have any idea of the pain and agony this doctor has caused me? and I am still going through it! I feel worthless and am depressed all the time now, I still am not getting proper care and the expense I have endured since this started.. well put it this way I have never been in the hole so bad since this has happened, if this doctor drug tested me with out my knowledge and did an in proper test causing false results why shouldn't he be responsible for my loss! HE WAS MY DOCTOR FOR 16 YEARS! and he just kicked me to the curb! This has nothing to do with what your saying it is a moral issue and that doctor should pay for what he is doing to me! although I have not got legal help yet because I do not like the idea of suing a doctor and to be honest with you I don't know if I have the strength to go through it but if I don't start getting proper treatment soon I will have no choice.

I have the same thing that happens to me I can never get caught failing a drug test because I have an over active metabolism and it wipes out everything overnight so my clinic does not believe I am taking it even tho every morning of my life for 2 years I drink it in front of them. It was only after telling them about my condition they tested me and found out I was not lying. So dont worry you probably should be tested for an over active metabolism.

Joanna I saw what you wrote about false things on urine test I went to my ptc and gave a urine test and it came back that I had methodone in my system and I do not take it but I do have the fentyln patch and take perocet 10 three times a day the pa came into the room and told me that I had methodone in my system and I do not take anything except what they give me but she said she had seen me before which I never seen the lady ever and she said nothing that they prescribed me was in my system and I raised my sleeve up to show her my patch and asked her how can that be when I just changed my patch the way it was prescribed and I wear them religiously what do you mean that it can come back false pisitive when I have the patch on and show her and took my perocet at 7:am when my appt. was at 8am I am so hurt that she was calling me a liar when I was proving to her I had my patch on took my bottle with me with the right amount of meds left in them but they still told me they had to let me go and
I have been going to them for over a year and never had a problem it is because I have Wellcare for insurance or what I am in shock because I took a second test and you really do not know if they test it or not or say they do and the reason I have to go to a ptc is lung and breast cancer and two failed back surgeries with the second being fusion with dead ppl bones and plates and screws holding my back together.I have never felt so bad about myself until today 4-4-2014 and I am so scared cause I had questioned my pharmacy about my meds before because there were some gone and it went from their hand to mine no one else and they got mad and then last month they wanted to change my appt. and I told them no and now this problem arises because I was going to be out of my meds for three days she said do they have the right to change or even say they will call my ptc I do not know if they called and tried or not now I am in pain and having to try to find myself anorher ptc if I can so desparate if you have any suggestions please let me know.Scared,Hurting and feel so bad being called a liar.Thank You.

Ultra/tramadol helps with breakthrough pain a lot. I have two slipped disks and take 8mg subtext/bupe/suboxone daily and it holds me all day. At times.I can't handle.it so I take 150_200 mg tramadol. It takes like 85-99% of the pain away. Makes my stomach feel funny so I take it with toast, crackers, ginger ale.

Just curious why is the pharmacy drug testing you? is that even legal? If you think the pharm is somehow diluting your meds or buying an illegal brand why would they do the testing? Something is fishy........

I always suggest looking at the numbers and packaging and look it up on the internet, I do this with aspirin. not that they can't fake logos and imprint but I wouldn't put much against big pharma. you can always send away the med or a part of it to an independent lab or the FDA to be tested.

Labs make errors all the time, find another lab.

Possibly you have been blind dosed or given a placebo, as if the body is given what you believe to be the real drug can trick the body into believing, however not everyone is fooled completely, I hate the idea of being given a placebo when I'm paying for a real med.....this could be a possibility...ap.

I am a TN with autoimmune disease which is very painful. I've been with the same pain control specialist and after six years they tell me my last urine screen showed no methadone and no Norco. First, the Norco is a as needed for migraines, obviously I didn't have a migraine that week. When I walked into the office, I asked for the urine test as I knew it needed to be done prior to years end. Now if I was pulling a fast one, why would I suggest and insist on the urine that day and if I was pulling a fast one I have the education and knowledge that I would take a dose 30 min prior. So here I am an educated medical professional with a painful and rare disease being treated like I'm being sent to the principals office. Come to think of it, in between tests I switched to a different pharmacy who uses a different manufacturer. Could that have an effect? Something to Google next. So I'm being put through all this stress and what ever happened to advocating for your patient? Rather than making accusations simply run another test. Pain patients receive very little respect. Even by the specialist you put the quality of your life, or what's left of it, in their hands are quick to turn on you rather then admit there may have been another explanaton. In one evenings search I have found many documented reasons and same scenario. Help. Any other suggestions as to why.

I have to take exception to the offering to give your annual ua at your request? To skilled professionals who face deceptive drug seekers daily that's the oldest trick in the book . It's like a drunk driver offering to take a test thinking the officer would think we'll why would he offer if he was drinking? It happens all the time. I BY NO MEANS AM IMPLYING THATS THE CASE WITH YOU I'm just playing devils advocate. The second scenario you requested well according to a standard pain contract a urine should be done randomly not at the patients request. These kinds of interactions with your provider may be indeed sending red flags for possible issues with misuse. LOGICALLY it's far easier to believe a lab error occurred but I'm not the suspicious type just playing devils advocate.I sincerely hope you work this out and continue receiving relief for a very painful condition as I suffer from an auto immune disorder as well. God speed.

I have taken oxycodone for 10 years w/ out fail, 10 mgs 6 times a day. My urine test (as I was told and denied any more from my family Dr.) states that I have never taken them, and my Dr. has accused me of "diverting" my pills ....(selling?). I have an MRI on file showing massive spine deterioration and painful nerve damage. HELP!!!
