False Positive On Drug Test For Morphine

I am in the marine corp and was prescribed Oxycodone 5mg for an injury and on a drug test i tested positive for morphine. i have never taken or been given morphine. i have done research and have documents saying that oxycodone can make a false positive for morphine. does anyone else have other info about this situation, cuz the more the better to support my case. thank you

Hi Jay,

It is definitely well-known that on the cheaper, less reliable drug tests, it seems as though anything is likely to show up. From my perspective, drug testing facilities like to put the blame on "you" for their own mistake. They define it as a 'false-positive' as opposed to a 'mistake' on their part, to take the liability away from them and back on you, the patient for "taking something you shouldn't have taken".

They have the choice to use better drug testing equipment, such as a gas chromatograph mass spectrometer; which has the ability to distinguish the exact substance in question. They just don't use it as often due to costs, so they would rather take the high risk of displaying a misreading than pay a few extra dollars.

I would see about getting that type of drug test done on the original sample if at all possible.

I just had that happen to me today and have been taking only Percocet and tested positive for morphine and have never taken morphine so yes the same just happened to me !!!

Anonymous is exactly right....Oxy, fentynal, morphine, dilaudid, heroin, & I believe Demerol as well they all metabolize into morphine in the body, the only exception is hydrocodone and for some reason I just totally forgot what that metabolizes as. So as long as you have/had a script for Oxy you would have nothing to worry about. And just so you don't think I'm throwing false info out there, I was a paramedic for 10yrs as well as being a pre-med major and then I switched to get my RN(less financial aid and it pays just about as much as MD).

Oxycodone does NOT metabolize out to morphine. It metabolizes into oxymorphone and nor-oxycodone. In any event, you should be able to prove you had been Rx'd pain meds (if you dont have the bottle, go to the pharmacy to get a duplicate receipt). It is possible that a cheap drug test was used. However, usually if there's a discrepancy showing a + result, the sample is submitted for further specific testing in a lab.

Fentanyl doesn't metabolize to morphine, either, nor does hydrocodone. Codeine does, as does heroin.

Today my pain doctor told me that on a surprise pill count call in, the tongue stick test popped positive for morphine. I had a Whipple a year ago and been on 15mg oxycodone 4x day and 100mg tramadol 3x day. He added xtampza last month. I don't have morphine and have not taken morphine. And the stick test is just to check if you have the meds in your system and turn blue. How in the hell could the stick be positive for morphine especially when it is tossed in the trash when turned blue. No urine test. Any advice, please????? My doctor asked me to call the Lab company and ask what the deal was.
