Fentanyl Patch (Top voted first)
UpdatedCAN ANYONE TELL ME HOW TO KEEP THE PATCH FROM COMING OFF AFTER SECOND DAY ? I SHOWER A COUPLE TIMES A DAY AND ON THE SECOND DAY THE PATCH WON'T STAY ON.THEN YOU USE MORE THAN WHAT IS PERSCRIBED AND YOU RUN OUT OF PATCHES AND THE INSURANCE COMPANY WON'T PAY FOR ANY MORE THAN PERSCRIBED, THEN COMES WITHDRAWAL?
JOHN : I USE THE MYLAN patch that is just like a piece of tape .the instructions that comes with this patch says it is ok to bath, swim are whatever.I have tried using the film to cover the patch to keep it attached to the skin but this allows more of the drug to enter ths body at one time.the same as when your body temperture raises.the drug works but if i knew what i know nowabout this drug i would never started using it.thanks
I found that the clear second skin products the 1x2 3/8for 50mg size(Tegaderm by 3M, can get them at any drugstore) that are made for covering burn areas does a great job of keeping this on my skin. I have tried the alcohol cleaning the skin, no lotion etc, but had the same falling off problem. When I found the clear Tegaderm items, it made all the difference in the world. I think some people have a higher level of oils in their skin than others, making the adhesive not stick
My husband uses the fentanyl patch and has since Nov 2007. The patch worked wonders for his pain and he showed every day with it on with no problem. Just be sure the skin is dry, no lotion or power on skin before applying.
I have been useing the Fentynal patch for somw time now and they have been nothing but troule trying to keep them on. I found a medical tape at walgreens that is 100% waterproof that I would end up taping the patch on. this tape is kind of a rubber based product. I really streaches with you and holds good. Other than that I've tried everything. I finally got tired of withdrawning at the end of each month because of the Insurance issues ( they can care less about you!) and went back to an oral pain medication. good luck!
isobutyl alcohol, wash area on arm and let dry, this helps alot. i only have about 1 comming loose about every 6 months or so & i live in sw az. the few that do come loose i put a few drops of superglue on edges where adhisive is. that wont come off. you can use that white tape also. i wear 2 100mcg every 3 days and the alcohol does great.
If you are using the Jenssen name brand (not generic), you need the number on the foil pack or box, your 72-hr dose amount (so they know what size you need), call Jenssen and they will send you a three month supply of J&J Bioclusive breathable adhesive covers. When you are close to running out call them and they will continue to re-suppy you.
Also, when you wash, do not use lotions, dry the skin extrm. well before putting the patch on. Alcohol will help as suggested earlier. Good luck. I have used the patch and receive the J&J covers every 3 months for 6 years now.
NO! Nonononono NO. If you read the inserts put in with the patches, be they Duragesic or a generic; it says never to use alcohol or things that can irritate your skin. Alcohol does irritate your skin. It may not be all awful & honkin' red kind of irritated, but if you put the patch on over the area cleaned with alcohol, it can cause a release of too much medication & that is BAD. I'm shocked nobody has mentioned tincture of benzoin to help keep patches on. You put it on the edges of where the patch will be placed & it is fantastic!!!
Now to address the "nosy Nessies" coming off all & high & mighty questioning why so many of us are on this medication; it's none of your flipping business! ALL diseases are terminal! Nobody makes it out of this world alive forever. So, just mind your own issues & if you're going to judge others, be sure to share with everyone your medical history, whether you drink (at all!!!), smoke, use recreational drugs, eat too much, have schadenfreude & if you pay your taxes. Since some of you are so eager to judge those of us using a medication legally; we're all eager to know EVERYTHING about you so we can judge you as well.
Try a product made by 3M called Nexcare Tegaderm transparent dressings. You simply place the dressing directly on top of your fentanyl patch. You will then be able to shower daily without fear of losing your patch.I've been using them for a year, and used to have the same problems w/them coming off prematurely.Pain doc suggested
Call patch manufacturer and report. They sent me a LARGE supply of clear sticky cover patches to keep Duragesic patches
from falling off, free of charge. A little tricky putting them on, but with practice....
I just started the mylan patch and it came off witin an hour every patch and every time. I called Mylan and they make a substance to apply to the patch after it is applied. I should get mine by friday 5/7/09. Call the 800 number on the instruction page in the box with the patches. They will also pay for any additional patches needed outside the time period when insurance won't pay becuz it is too early. The instruction say to through patch away once it starts to come off. Call Mylan they will help
I'm all new to keeping patches on too! I've had 3 come off in just one weekend! UGH! Desperate times call for desperate measures so after reading all these posts this is what I've done and seems to be working, even with swimming and showering.
Clean the area well with warm water (I put my patch to the left or right of my belly button). Let it air dry well or give it a shot with the cool setting on a hair dryer for about a minute. Apply the patch. Curad waterproof tape works very well for me (and I sweat a lot, have oily skin and it's 95 and VERY humid where I live) Apply the tape on all 4 sides of the pain patch. Then I applied a piece of Tegraderm and taped the edges of that down on all 4 sides with Curad WP tape. Lastly cut a piece of Glad FREEZER bag (not regualr food bag plastic) to overlap the other layers and tape on all 4 sides. Press down as hard as you for a minute (if you use a hair dryer, use the low setting for a minute....it helps make the adhesive, on everything, stick a lot better and press hard on it again. Do your best to keep everything flat and not wrinkle or roll up as you put it on. I applied this yesterday morning, have showered 3 times (using hot water and taking my good old time!) and spent 6 hours swimming in the pool. It hasn't budged or bunched up at all since I put it on Saturday morning and the patch and layers are bone dry~no water has gotten near the pain patch! (I am calling Mylan for some of those special patch covers but until they arrive this will work) I sure hope this helps someone~it's frustrating when you only have so many patches and they won't stay on! Have a good evening! Cath
If you use Mylan brand fentanyl patch, there is a number you can call to get four boxes of 20 gum covers per script. This seems to have done the trick. They fedx over night and must know their product had this fault because it's absolutely free; here is the number to Mylan's Customer Relations Department: 1-800-796-9526. Hope this helps!
Take a sandwich bag, lay it over the patch, put waterproof tape on all sides, this will make it waterproof. Then remove after your shower.
Hey Everyone, you can order FREE OF CHARGE the BIOCLUSIVE dressing especially for the duragesic patch, Drug must be Duragesic (not generic) . you can contact them directly at 1-800-526-7736 they will send you 50 dressings. I have been using them for the past 5 years and trust me , they work! I also get my Duragesic free of charge through ortho-mcneil/Jensen pharm's patient assistance program. I hope this helps someone.
It is true about cleaning the spot well with alcohol. I do the area 2 times before applying my patch and hardly ever have a problem with the patch coming off. Try it and good luck!
Fentynal.. i'm sure I mispelled it. I use a nasal spray, let it dry then apply patch. Also you can ask your dr to give u the plastic clear patches they use for IV's to cover it. Just an idea for ya... Hope it works.
I have found the Tegaderm patches to be pretty effective at keeping the Fentanyl patches on without too many problems. I tried a generic brand that CVS sold because they were cheaper, but they didn't seem to stay on as well as the Tegaderm brand.
I am having the same problem - going through withdrawals every 2 days because these patches won't stay on. I am going to try to tape by 3M that is recommended on this site & see if that helps. I've been using regular medical tape, but that has not been working. If you haven't tried any the tape, I would suggest that. It seems to be the best solution... Good Luck to you!
Lisa-- DANGER my friend!! Research Fentanyl or Duragesic.. you'll find specifically what NOT to do.. -- packing tape? Dont do it...
There are three different manufacturers of Fentanyl, each are different. Some may work better for certain patients than others.
I've tried 2 different patched and have had no problem with either and that includes swimming , showering. Etc.
Make sure the area is dry. Shave all the hair off the area at least1- 2 days before putting on the patch. Hold it down for 30 sec. The patches cannot be exposed to high temperatures. So do not run hot water Rigg on the patch. I do that area last with colder water. I have several other comments about this patch in the 50s. You can read those as well. Good luck.
