CAN ANYONE TELL ME HOW TO KEEP THE PATCH FROM COMING OFF AFTER SECOND DAY ? I SHOWER A COUPLE TIMES A DAY AND ON THE SECOND DAY THE PATCH WON'T STAY ON.THEN YOU USE MORE THAN WHAT IS PERSCRIBED AND YOU RUN OUT OF PATCHES AND THE INSURANCE COMPANY WON'T PAY FOR ANY MORE THAN PERSCRIBED, THEN COMES WITHDRAWAL?
Hi, I am a former Registered Nurse and a Mylan Fentanyl patch user for years. I had the same problem with the patch falling off.
Here is how to make it stay on without interfering with the effectiveness of the patch.
I contacted the company they said to clean the area with just plain water, dry it off.
I also found if you hold your hand over the patches for about a minute, it helps to warm them up so the "glue" sticks betters.
If they come loose, or I perspire a lot, I cover them with Tegaderm patches. These are used in the hospital all the time to cover different things to keep them in place, and it works well.
Get a prescription for it, it's expensive. If insurance won't pay, I've been buying them on Ebay.
Hope this helps.
Good luck.
I have been on the patch for about 7 years. At first it worked out fine. In fact, it made me want to live to fight another day., That's how important they are. This month they started falling off. The company sent me the product to put over the patch. They both rollled up and fell off me body. I did call the company and advise the, they said to call my dr and advise him and I just go a message they he won't call it in early. Which I have never asked in over 7n years. The withdrawal is horrific as well as the pain. I'm on 75 every 72 so it's a strong dose. And very much needed. I was totaled by a truck and have lived in pain since 1996. What do you guys do when you lose your patch early. Does your doctor basicaly screw you. I'm not letting this go. I think it's barbaric. Like I'm not suffering enough every day of my life. Any thoughts?
I have been using them for nearly a year with no problem of them coming loose or coming off. We use 3M 1 in paper tape around the entire edge of the patch where the actual adhesive is on the patch. Do not tape over the medicine part of the patch. It can cause an increase in heat and cause more medicine to be induced into your system. Bad deal. That is why you cannot put heat on it. When I take a shower I do not allow hot water to hit the patch. I protect it and then use warm or cool water at the end of the shower to wash the area around the patch.
Hope this helps. DJT
I have the same problem. My patches either fall right off or they stop working after 48 hours. You can't swim or hot tub or sweat. The pharmacist acts like you are some drug addict if your patches give you problems. I just want them to work the way they say they do. I hate taking pain medicine, but at this point it's the only thing that helps. Any tips on a brand that will hold up for the 72 hours. (25 mcg) Thanks
I read a post where it said to put the patch on your arm-(put arm down with palm out, and put patch above the bend in elbow and below the shoulder)On opposite side where you would receive a shot. Use brown sticky sports wrap around it to keep it on. Before you take a shower split a large freezer bag and tape it over both. I would even go so far as to start the whole process by first using tegaderm before I put on sports wrap.
Lisa-- DANGER my friend!! Research Fentanyl or Duragesic.. you'll find specifically what NOT to do.. -- packing tape? Dont do it...
Tegaderm patches are $10 at Walmart - no prescription needed, and you wont use the entire patch.. cut it inhalf then in half again... Everything else I've heard from duct tape to band aids is just crazy. Read the ISSUES of what can happen if you do those things. Respiratory Depression. - I mean seriously! Or death!
Ask you Pharmacist - its FREE.. -- I had cancer and Im on a low dose 12mcg.. and glad because these are dangerous long term and can be abused. Do your research, and DO NOT believe everything you hear on here, I mean seriously. Unless the letters MD follow their names. -- just my thoughts.

I cut a strip of the tape about an inch or so wider on each side and place the patch in the center of the tape and place it on my arm. They dont come off until I remove them. I bath, swim, etc. and they keep hanging on.
I was so happy to find this forum, as I am really struggling with this. In all that I've read, I don't think anyone has mentioned that sticking the patch onto the (whatever kind) tape FIRST makes a big difference. Getting a smooth union between the 2 items I think is essential! The tape or whatever is stronger, so why not really take best advantage of it? Then, when it goes on your body it acts as one, as opposed to a band-aid-type of effect: just slapping something on top of a problem. I learned that one with nicotine patches.
I'm testing this method with 2-25s right now. One is using packaging tape, the other with fairly plain clear store brand medical tape. Let's see which one can pass the 36-48 hour mark!
I just started on the fentanyl patch today. We have a beac vacation planned for next month and was wondering if it will still be possible if I do not stay in the sun too long and can I swim if I cover the patch.
My post is a little late but I was on Fentanyl for five years and found the best way to keep the patches on was to use a Band-Aid, size 2 7/8 x 4 inches or the large ones. They are not waterproof and will get wet but they will stay on. I have worked out, played golf and softball and they didn't fall off. Good luck.
That's good to know I use alot of that brand
Fentnal patch cover. Does mylan give u the tegaderm cover or something else. Also if the phone# is on the box I'll find it if not please post the # so I can get some thanks
Hi i use the paper sticky tape they put on when you have stitches clean your skin with METHO put patch on press firm then put a 6inch strip of tape over the patch will not come off for 3day,s
I use the 100mcg and a 50 mcg patch every two days and to keep them on my skin i use band-Aid brand large cloth heavy duty band-aids. I can swim and shower with them on and have no problems with any coming off. The only thoing is that when you take them off, it might leave a little adhesive on your skin but alcohol takes that off easily. I am going to call the manufacturer tomorrow because I just read an earlier reply stating that the manufacturer of the patches will give you a clear tape style solution to the problem free of charge. That beats buying band-aids all the time. I try to catch them on sale and stock up. I hope thios helps
R/E Fentanyl Patches i clean the skin with Metho dry well put on patch and put that paper they use in Hospital,s over the Patch work,s well for me .try it .??
I went to a few different pharmacy's including two Walgreens and I am not sure if it isn't given a lot where I live or something but not a single pharmacist seemed to know of anything I could place over my patch. I ended up calling my DR who told me to use Tegaderm while I wait for Mylan to send me free dressings.
I just started on the patch after struggling with many other ineffective methods and drugs for pain management. So far this has been a godsend! I started on the 50mcg and I almost immediately noticed a huge difference in my level of pain and I feel I will no longer need breakthrough meds very soon. Anyways years ago when I quit smoking I used the nicotine patch and before I picked up this script I knew keeping the thing on was going to be a challenge for me. Using medical tape for the edges is a real pain in the rear and I had more issues with that sticking to my shirt and my sleeve pulling the patch off than the patch doing that by itself. I have the Mylan patch and they are sending me dressings to cover it and in the mean time while I wait for my shipment I picked up a box of Tegaderm Transparent Dressing and it is working like a charm. A lot of hospitals use these or what feels like these to cover IVs. They're breathable and flexible so they should remain on regardless of what you put it through and it shouldn't have an increase or decrease effect in the amount of meds your patch supply's you. This box of 8 was a little pricey ($10) but, I would highly recommend calling the manufacturer of your patch first as they seem to offer to send this out no questions asked and for free and use the store bought for the few days to a week you've gotta wait for your free ones to get here.
There is a clear adhesive patch that can safely go over the fentanyl patch, as it is breathable...it is the ONLY way I can keep the patch on as I have very oily skin. I get mine at Walgreens and they actually give me three at a time for FREE! since I have to do aquatic physical therapy 5 days per week I also use the super sticky waterproof tape from Walgreens to tape AROUND the adhesive patch. Don't ever use tape over the patch itself..it is very dangerous as your body can absorb the medication at a higher dosage rate if covered inappropriately, so only cover with an approved adhesive patch specific for use with the fentanyl patch. Without using these I couldn't even keep the patch sticking for much over 8-10 hours, so I'm pretty certain it would work well for you too. The name of it is BIOCLUSIVE TRANSPARENT DRESSING. Good luck, I hope you have a Walgreens near and can get them for free as well! If for any reason you experience any effects that concern you that covering it with this may be causing you personally to absorb too much, just fold it in half and cut a square hole about 3/4 the size of your patch and place it over that way, as you would still get the good hold but wouldn't be covering your patch entirely.
